My Camshaft Position Sensor and the Synchronizer failed on my 1996
Ford Ranger 3.0L. I have the new sensor and synchronizer plus the
special install tool. The Chilton's manual says the engine's No. 1
Cylinder must be set to 10 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) but it
doesn't say how to do this.
Any advice on how to set this or tell if it's set would be greatly
appreciated.

on your bottom pulley you should see a series of lines cut into the edge, the biggest line is tdc. you shoul also see a marker on the front of your engine this should be found in the vasinity of the bottom pulley. the other markers on the pulley usually represent 2degree increments i.e tdc, 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 and so on.
another way that the tdc is indicated is by a singular mark on the bottom pulley and the increments will be on plate bolted or moulded to front timming cover.
you should also check the distributer under the cap you may find a line cut into the outer caseing this indicates cylinder 1 and tdc if bottom pulley is on tdc then the rotor should also be pointing to the mark in distributer

I just posted the same problem, this is a DIS system and has a cam sensor in place of the distributor. A special tool is used to set the cam sensor syncronization. I have it all, ford book, haynes, and lots of advice but no real answers. If you find this out please post. Thanks guys
