HOW TO: *custom in-scale floormats*

So here is my little contribution to the in-scale-detail portion of How-to.

I have always been interested in making realistic interior/exterior detail and having as many features of the real 1:1 car as I can fit. So I started wondering why we never see in scale floor mats, which I am sure most of us have seen on real cars.

So here is my simple walk through on how to make custom floor mats.

I am going to be making floormats for my superdetailed Porsche GT2, because I will be using a transkit to have the driver door open, I am going to need to have a realistic interior. So I filled in the floor of the GT2 race interior with sheet styrene and here is what it looks like now:

Now I take masking tape, and layout a pattern on the floor to see what the shape of the floormats whould be and how they would be positioned:

Overlaying the mask over a sheet of styrene, I cut out the shape of the floor mat and two small square pieces for name plate and a driver side skid plate thats opften used in 1:1 car like so:

After the pieces are cut and test fitted, you can glue them together

Now, after the glue dries you can go ahead and paint your floor mats a solid color that you want.. I painted mine red, as I will have a red interior:

Here are the supplies you will need now, silver paint, black paint or a black magic marker and red flocking. You will have to use the flocking corresponding to your color theme and your flat main color.

I use white glue to apply flocking. I spread a thin layer of white glue all over the area that I want flocked and let it dry for a few secons, allowing the lgue to becoming tacky as so:

Here is how I apply flocking.. by dumping a lot of it on and press it with my fingers into the glue.

Then I brush off the access flocking and tap the underside of the part to make sure all the stray hairs and lfockings are out and I get left with this:

Now color in your name plates and your black skid plate like so:

and apply the floormat fasteners like these (phoetech nuts and bolts)

Now apply the sponsor decal you want over the silver strip and you have a complete floor mat ready to be installed in your interior...

I hope that helped and please feel free to ask any questions you want!

Man that's cool! What brand or kind of white glue did you use. I have some that I have used in the past for my seats, but if there is something out there better let us know. You are one step ahead of us, good job and thanks!

excellent job there dude, very well done. i was planning on doing a load of templates for people for various cars - car mats. a bit like hiroboy's window mask templates. they definately make the interior look so much better.
i realy want to get hold of some of the scale aluminium chequer plate material the ratdat used in his skyline!
