Grasp the fuel filter and nylon fuel connection line fitting. Twist quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within fitting. Using compressed air, blow out dirt from quick-connect fittings at end of fuel filter.
Remove the quick connect fitting by pushing inward toward the fuel filter and grasping plastic tab around the connector and pull apart.

I need to replace this on my '92, do you need to do anything special before you begin? (am I going to get fuel sprayed all over me?)

Relieve the fuel pressure first. Unplug the fuel pump, run the engine till it stalls, then crank it another 3 seconds. Also take off the gas cap. Fuel will still spill out, so your arm will get its fair share of it. But at least it won't spray all over you. Put rags or newspapers under to catch the fuel. Also wash after cause gasoline can cause cancer.

I'm pretty much a newbie with this, but I tried replacing the fuel filter on my 96 z24 this weekend. So I tried relieving the fuel pressure by starting it up, taking out the circuit breaker for the fuel pump relay, and then waiting. And waiting, and waiting. Finally after 45 minutes I gave up and put it back together. Does anyone know how long it normally takes to use up all the fuel in the line?

Normally when you turn your ignition to the ON position (dont start it), you'll hear a whir sound from under the car. That's the fuel pump. Get under your car and disconnect it. On my grand am, it's a lot of wires coming together to form a plug, and I had to unplug it. Look for a set of wires that come from inside the fuel tank. After you unplug it, turn the ignition to ON again and you shouldn't hear the fuel pump. If you still hear it, reconnect that plug and try a different one. When you start your car, it should stall immediately. Crank it for another 3 seconds.
The clip holding the filter in place was a pain on my car. Mine had a clip that flipped open, and I had to push it out the back with a screw driver. I was able to bend the line to get a look at the other side of the clip. Do your best not to break the clip - there's always a chance the new one won't fit.
