Well, a little about me. I am a native San Antonian doing time in the U.S. Navy and currently statioined in Hawaii. I am a photographer for the Navy so, I do dig photography along with Muscle Cars and art. I just happened to pick up a car model about a month ago and started to put it together. I found it very relaxing and takes my mind off the bad things going on in the world.

Well I got down to painting it and was very unhappy with the outcome and decided to do a little research. Man, this is some very in-depth stuff. I love intricate work and can't wait to hone my skills at it.

The first model I picked up was the 70.5 Baldwin Motion Camaro. My only questions so far deal with doing very detailed painting, like flame jobs and racing stripes with pinstriped borders, chrome sidepipe realism and Can Simple Green be used for removing paint off of car models? I would also really like to know how to make those side pipes look realistic, with holes and everything.

Oh and here is my real car that I hope to make a nice model of in the future. Thanx in advance!

Your car is awesome. Totally wicked awesome.

If you haven't already, check out the FAQ and the tutorial section. I know this sounds like a broken record, but there is a lot of stuff in there about stripping paint, and there should be tutorials on painting by people like PrimeraMan that teach you a lot. I doubt Simple Green would do it; while it is a very effective cleaner I think it's organic based and it won't have the same effect that a solvent would like CSC. Well, now that I think about it, they are both degreasers... so perhaps it would. You should try it and let us know. It will probably take a long time, as CSC is brutal and will melt your fingers if you touch it. As for your sidepipes, I don't know if you mean the hole in the end of the pipe or the holes in the sheild (or cooling thing, I have no idea of it's purpose) that goes the length of the exposed pipe. Either way, you could use a pin vise and very small bits, or if it is the peice of sheet metal wrapped around the pipe, I'd bet someone somewhere makes a photoetch part. If even you have to check model truck (like 18-wheelers) suppliers instead of cars.

Anyway, welcome, and have fun here. Read the FAQ etc, and if you still have questions we will be happy to help.

Sweet Vette. The Mo in the background is a nice touch!

The best way to do racing stripes (especially with pinstripe borders) is to get ahold of some colored decal film. Superscale and other companies make it. It can be difficult to find, I've had best luck at hobby shops specializing in model railroading, though many decent non-RR hobby shops might be able to order it for you. It's a sheet of decal film printed in a solid color. You just cut out the stripes/whatever other shapes you want, and apply with water in the usual way. If you want a wide back stripe bordered with white pinstripes, cut a 1/2" (or whatever width) stripe out of black, and a 9/16" wide (or whatever) stripe of white. First apply the white, and then center the black on top of it. This is also an easy way of doing flames- but definately not the only way!

Masking and painting can also be done, but they require a bit of experience with an airbrush- and they're not very forgiving. When you get good at it though, this is definately the best way to do a good flame job. Just master the basics first!

Good luck and welcome!

Yeah, I like the "Mighty Mo" in the back as well. Any other Hawaii modellers online?

Oh yes. No guarentee that nobody will mess with them but if I'm on an Aircraft Carrier, there should be no problem, just got to know where to go ;)

Honoturtle is in Hawaii, he also builds musclecar models so you might be able to get alot of tips from him. Sweet vette man, you should easily be able to pick up a model of it to build. You do use a spraycan to paint your model car bodys don't you?

Welcome to AF, hope to see ya around and hope to see your models too.

Yeah you will loose alot of money getting into this hobby, but all hobbys have a price. I try to keep my spendings on model stuff down, I only buy 1-2 cans of tamiya spray to do a model and brsuh paint the interior/engine. Only costs me about $60 to get a week of not getting bored, and having something to look at after.

Hi, and welcome! :)
Nice `vette!
So far I have only used spray cans but, thinking on getting an airbrush setup.

I think most here would agree that unless you need a very specific color you need to mix, you can get a perfectly fine paint job from spray cans. In fact, some here have gotten some quite spectacular finishes from cans, even without rubbing out the finish. Pman comes to mind immediately, but there are plenty of others. I never use an airbrush, and I have no plans to get one. :)
