Changing the fuel filter

When I remove my old fuel filter(2002 5.3) is the less than a quarter tank of gas going to drain out on me? Also, will opening the gas cap release enough pressure, or should I still bleed the system via the shrader valve?

No, you will only get fuel that is in the lines...the pump (in the tank) will not allow fuel to flow through. I have changed several with 3/4 to full tanks and never had a problem. Good idea to remove gas cap to relieve pressure, I never have but can't hurt...keep bare bulb treble lights a good distance away.... have fun.
