Idle problem

aight everyone, just lookin for some confirmation or serious mocking on this one. the 89 IROC i bought has been giving me troubles with cold starts, and startin after it has been sitting for a while. i have absolutly no history of anything done to it, the guy i bought it from only had it a year, and didnt know the people he bought it from. but it runs good. ive done a tune up, cap rotor plugs wires, wire looms and set the timing. and then the trans promply took a dump. so now i go out to start itup and keep everythign fresh, but it wont keep running till it warms up. i havent done any diagnostics, im feelin kinda lazy (just repaired four of my families cars, major work, very tired) so im kinda lazyboy wrenching on this one. so here it is, i start it, and where most cars would idle at around 1500 or 1200, the idle wont stabilize, it just keeps dropping till the engine stalls and dies. start itup, same thing, if i press the throttle, purrs like a kitten, when it warms up, it idles just fine. but it only does it when its cold, and when its been sitting for a while. im thinking its my IAC, or maybe an ICM, i would say it could be colt start enrichment but i dont think the computer is fried. so i dont think thats it. it also has a brand new interstate megatron battery. the only thing i havent really tested is the alternator. but i havent noticed a charging problem on the instrument panel. only when its dying, so i cant tell if the charge is dropping because of the rpms dropping, or the other way around. this should be a fun one. RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!!

Iroc Iroc Iroc...this saddens me to read that you have not ran it for codes. That's your signature advise. So here I am to save the day. Run you car for codes, you can do this by.....nah..I can't belittle you like that. But I had the same problem with my v6 like a week after I bought it. check your maf. Sound dumb?? that's what I thought too. But that was the problem. I don't think it's your ignition coil, but hey shit happens, like psyde said, it happened to him. I've heard of crazier things. Umm..vacuum lines. Ah, and your computer, get a chip..lol j/k your spark advance is controlled by your computer, you might want to check that out too. And I almost forgot...run it for codes..:)

12-24-2003, 12:02 PM
ah 92RS, what would i do without you :) and i applaud you for the self control on the procedure, must have been hard for ya ;) ill probly run the codes after xmas. but like i said, ive been staying hours after work fixing family cars, and im just tired. christmas presents and all, i happend to fire it up and move it the other night, and thats what reminded me there was a prob, just didnt feel like messing with it. but i haddent even thought about the maf sensor, thats a good one. ill look into that. as far as vac lines and a chip and whatnot, drove home without a stumble 1100 miles from arkansas, so im pretty sure its a part or something that is just failing, rather than a computer prob. just my gut feeling but thanx for the advice.

oh and i went out and scanned both camaros for codes the other day (the RS is actin up too, think shes mad im sellin her, surges from 500 to 1000 rpm at idle in park, and also surges while driving, just enough to kick the lockup converter on and off) and neither car has any codes. lol, irony it seems is not without a sense of humor ;) my number one piece of advice is worthless to help me out on this one. ah well, ill pull the IAC in the IROC and look at it for operation today, see if thats the problem, then look at the MAF and the PCV valve. seeif all thats cool, if i cant find a prob with those, move onto the coil. from there, its a crap shoot.

12-27-2003, 09:50 AM
Your selling your RS?? Why?? C'mon don't do it...well hmmm how much do you want for it? Ah who am I kidding I'm having to get rid of one of mine right now too..it sucks. I hate living in an apartment. I run out of time and money for a month and I have to get rid of my project. And this was gonna be the good one.

Vlad_Tepes
12-27-2003, 01:03 PM
What RS you getting rid of Iroc?

89IROC&RS
12-27-2003, 03:30 PM
92RS, yeah, after the accidnt where the lady hit me with the lincoln, it was cheaper to go buy the IROC with all the options i was going to put on the RS anyway, rather than pay to fix the RS. even though i have to start all over again, the RS is the one in the pics, and she wernt that pretty when i got her. and neither is the IROC. but hey, cant argue with the price i got on her. and its all pretty much cosmetic to fix her up. and the guy im selling her to is a body repair guy, so hes gonna fix the RS up right. no bondo or anything as far as i can tell.

and Vlad, i have two cars, hence the name, both 1989 vintage, had the black RS for the past four years. thats Miss. Scarlet. and the IROC ive had for a month now, bought it cuz of the accident, and thats the She Devil :) cant afford the insurance on both, no where to store the RS, so gotta let her go. im gonna cry like a baby man, thats the first car my dad bought me, my first speeding ticket, first time making out in a car..... lots of memories, its gonna be a bad day when i hand over those keys :(

12-27-2003, 03:34 PM
oh and 92RS, im starting at 3K for it, which i dont think is unreasonable, its got a new jasper engine, been extreamly well cared for by yours truly, all AC delco parts, just put in a new radiator, brakes, all the filters, oil change, tune up with plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and set the timing, shes in great shape, interior mostly, paint is showing its age a bit, but no peeling or layering like most third gens have. (think its already been painted once) so even with the damage, i dont feel bad about the price. only thing thats buggin me is that engine surge, i wanna fix that before i let her go.

If you still got it later I might have you just ship it over...

thanx 92RS, i just hope i feel good about the guy i sell her to when i meet him, ill feel better if i think shes goin to a good home. oh and vlad, are you serious? i wouldnt pay for it, but hell if you want to. i know youd treat her right, so if your serious, ill send ya some pics.

oh and back to my problem. went out today, pulled the MAF looked it over, the wire is intact, screens are there, one of the terminals has a slight bit of corrosion on it due to a broken connector cover, let in moisture and whatnot. but otherwise i cant see anything wrong with it, also, a TPI question here, am i supposed to have two PCV's ?? one in each valve cover, cuz there is a breather hose from the throttle body to the passenger side valve cover, that is open, just a plastic pipe sticks in, no check valve or anything, it looks very ghetto rigged and leaks oil bad, so i dont think its stock, i think there is supposed to be a PCV there. any clue? i did a test on the IAC valve, but couldnt get it out to look at it, socket wouldnt fit, gotta get a wrench, but if i did the test right, it was supposed to start clicking, but it didnt make a sound, also when i was warming up the engine, i was running at around 1500rpm, and as it warmed up it slowly worked its way down to 1000 rpm like it should do, so i reved it up to 2000 to bring it to operating temp, as soon as the needle hit 100 degrees, the rpms shot to 2500rpm like something suddenly woke up. which i dont get, cuz i dont know of anything that turns on at 100 degrees. i also played with the TPS and with the throttle blades at the idle position pressed down the blade on the TPS and made the engine add a bit of fuel, which seemed to smooth the idle, and get rid of the surging that popped up. but it still wasnt perfect. so i might have a clogged fuel filter, but i dont think thats the whole problem. and guess what, STILL NO CODES!!!!!! im becoming very put out. lol, ive become so computer relyant its scary :)

1992RS
12-28-2003, 03:45 PM
well as for that hose..again I'm not a tpi guy, but the tbi has it too. there's even a filter for it in the air cleaner. It's part of the...damn I can't remember what it's called. but it serculates fuel vapors from somerwhere back into the intake. but again I don't know about the TPI. As for the rest of your problems..I think my brain is on vacation today.

12-28-2003, 08:12 PM
IROC yeah I'm serious...

Just got to talk the ol lady into shipping the damn thing..LOL

Where do you live? and do you have a shipping terminal there?

Den79
12-28-2003, 08:32 PM
Sounds like TPS or intake leak

89IROC&RS
12-28-2003, 10:26 PM
lol, wow vlad really thought you were kidding but hey, i live in Northern Virginia just south of D.C. on the east coast. no idea about a shipping port or whatever, although Norfolk Virginia is only three hours south of me, and its a major port town. thats where the largest US navy port is. so id bet there is one down there. i went to school there, give me a chance to go visit old friends ;) PM me your email, and clean it out as much as possible and ill be happy to send you some pics of the damage. but to be fair, ill probly wind up letting this guy from west virginia come take a look first, and he suonds like hes ready to buy it. but if he changes his mind, your next on the list. you sure you wanna buy a car sight unseen though????

oh and 92RS i know what your talking about, and yeah its got a filter, which makes sence, and its part of the PCV system. but this has no filter, and has gobs of oil in it. which makes me nervous. ill check at th parts counter tomorrow at work. see what they have to say.

and Den, i agree that the TPS could be faulty but im pretty sure i dont have a vac leak or anything, that causes high rpm idle, and mine is stalling out. too low. unless your talking about another leak, like coolant or something.

89IROC&RS
12-28-2003, 10:29 PM
oh and vlad, might be a selling point for the old lady, in addition to the new radiator, last year i put in a new cooling fan, fan switch, and fan relay, might be important cuz of the heat down there :)

12-28-2003, 11:15 PM
Well I was going to say something but I forgot....hmmm oh yeah you said after the temp reached 100 it woke up right? Well EVERYTHING runs off the temp. Like the discusion we had a while back about low temp thermo's. Your computer has a preset temp that it uses to keep your engine running right. Like if I put that 160 stat on my car without the chip then it'll run like do do. It runs of the temp sensor, that's how the RPMs come down when you reach operating temp. It's possible that either the temp sensor is sending funny signals or your computer has gone silly. Don't know what it's worth, but it's a place to take a look.

Genopsyde
12-29-2003, 12:23 AM
perhaps the previous owner installed a lower temp thermo without a chip...

My RS was my first car too, bought it myself with settlement money that was in the bank. I'll have had it for 7 years in july. I could never sell it tho, that would be like selling off my first born child, what a cruel, heartless thing to do. 89IROC&RS, I'm very disappointed in you.

This might sound weird but one of the things you do to check a MAF on a turbo buick is to tap on it when it is running. if it stumbles it's bad. Not a garuntee that it will work but it's worth a shot.

Hypsi, where's some photos of your GN?

Ill try to get some up this week I got some I've just been bz with the GN I orderd a cam and a Posi setup (no mor one wheel wonders :grinno: ) I'm also putting new main and rod bearings in it as well.

89IROC&RS
12-29-2003, 07:48 PM
yeah the tapping is to test for a broken wire, the heated element in the system. mine is intact. good idea though.

oh and thanks genopsyde, i think ill go slit my wrists now. not like im feeling bad enough, seriously this is killing me, but i just dont have any other choice. but i understand you had to nail me on it ;)

and the temp sensor is a possiblity, man this just keeps getting better and better, ill add it to the list. lol.
