1995 Chevrolet Blazer transmission problems

When I first start driving my Blazer in the morning it acts as if it is really low geared. You can set the cruise control at 55 and when the temp gauge reaches half way between cold and normal the tach will drop 400 RPM's without any speed loss. Sometimes it will repeat the same thing once the ignition is turned off but not always. It will never repeat it without turning the ignition off. I had it checked at a transmission shop and he said they were all like that. I can not believe that. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

yes this is normal. it is your torque converter locking up. it gives you better gas mileage. mine does exactly the same thing.

I was talking to a GM mechanic with a 94 Safari Van, 4.3L, we got talking about this and he says he van does the same thing, the way he explained it to me was that theres a valve in the tranny that wornout the will not allow it to drop down, once it warms up its fine. Mine does it to, on really cold days I just fire the truck up for 15 minutes and let that tranny fluid cycle trough that rad, once its warm no problems.

OK, I can understand the need to warm up the transmission to get that valve to work correctly, but why does the transmission sometimes do that when it is already warmed up after the ignition is off for as little as 10 seconds (like if the engine dies).

Maybe it takes a couple of minutes for the pump in the transmission to get caught up to after the engine being off?
