so im totally new to all this upgrading stuff and i thought what better place than to come onto an online forum and ask about the people who are actually experienced and can talk other than just me reading off sites. can anyone tell me what i can do to keep my car street legal, and what are these 11's and 14's and 9's you guys always talk about? Thanks alot for any and all information and help given... i appreciate it more than you would think =)

I can help. Go to http://www.3si.org/ then click mods. And the 11's 14's and 9's are 1/4 mile times.

so do you have a base? in your info page it says 3000GT but no SL or VR-4 so i will assume it is a base model. honestly, if you want more power, the best way to really get it is to start with a VR-4 and go from there. if you really want to stick with your car, maybe put a VR-4 engine in there or swap the necessare parts... those would be (from what i could think of off the top of my head assuming you have the DOHC, forgot what year you said)

different pistons. you need these because they will be able to take the more demanding needs of a more powerful turbocharged setup and you will need to lower your compression

different rode (i think) that are stronger.

bigger injectors and fuel pump

probably a different ecu that is ment for this application

of course the turbos, pipeing, and intercoolers

that is probably the basice and there are a lof of other little things that you need to do.

many people start out doing BPU or basic performance upgrades. on a turbo car this means a better flowing intake and exhaust and a boost controller so you can turn up the boost and get more power. on an N/A 3kgt (naturally aspirated aka no turbo 3000 GT) it is the same but no boost controller. after that you might do something like a UDP (under drive pully) or a lightweight pully. also you can adjust your cam timeing with adjustable cam gears to get more power. another way to get more power is by doing head work so that your heads can flow more through them and bore out your cylinder walls out so that you can get more displacement which will give you more power as well (but you need larger pistons here). also you might be able to get someone to put a stroker kit together for you so that you can get more displacement but i have not seen anyone do this on a 3000, would not be all that hard though i think.

then you have power adders, turbos, superchargers, and notrous oxide. these all put more oxygen into your engine and the power comes from having fuel combust in the proper (called stoichiometric in the proper chemestry terms) ratio. thus if you add more oxygen you get a bigger explosion and more power, just have to make sure that you have enough fuel to back it up or you will blow up your engine. turbos force air in by having the exhaust gas from the engine push a pinwheel like wheel that turns another wheel on the intake air side to compress air into the engine. a supercharger is the same idea of forcing air in but rather than getting to power from exhaust gas, it is belt driven. nitrous oxide is just sprayed or injected somewhere so that i gets to the combustion chamber.

in a nutshell, power comes from fuel and oxygen exploding, more fuel and air = more power. also makeing sure that the intake air path and exhaust path a as unrestricted as possible makes power. also making sure that everything is there in the proper amount at the proper time makes power. there is way to many ways to do this to list here.

i am not even going to really go into suspension and stuff, i do not have another several hours here to give you a brief overview lol.

as far as keeping your car street legal goes, it totally depends on where you are and how strict the cops are. some places you can't do ANYTHING and cops are asses, most places you are not really allowed to do much but lots of people do and the cops do not care. most of it has to do with emmissions requirements though.

as for the numbers, well they are numbers, they could be used for anything. parts of car names, parts of engine nemes, displacement, horsepower, 60 fott times, 1/4 mile times, track times, boost pressures. so what you asked there does not really lend itself to being answerable. for example i drive a 3000 GT VR- 4 it has a 6 G72 engine that has a 3.0 liter displacement and produces 320 horsepower at 11 psi. at the track i can pull off a 1.7 60 foot time and get a 1/4 mile time of 13.5 at 101 mph.

see lots of numbers. i assume that they are probably 1/4 times though. a 13 sec car is fast for stock, a 10 - 11 sec car will kill anything on the street and a 6 sec car is a really fast track only car.

if any of this seemed confusing, i would go to www.howstuffworks.com and research the piston engine. after that do a lot of reading on www.3si.org and www.stealth316.com and ask small specific questions once you have searched for the answer and have not found it. your question as was stated before can and does take up the pages of millions of books to answer but i hope this very brief description will head you in the right direction.

howstuffworks.com is an awsome website, check out rotory engines. Very interesting stuff.

damn, good idea. i know how rotery engines work more or less but i would love to have a firmer grasp on the finer details.
