I can tell you that older Firebirds are beasts. My car overheated (bad radiator), the tranny leaked out ( bad linkeage hose), hard working, etc. and it still started, drove and lasted and it still lasts. It just one of those cars that are tough. Now for the newer ones I would still recomend the firebird, because its pontiac, and while very close to chevy I just prefer pontiac.

I love camaros, but I have seen a lot of them breaking down.

I would go with a camaro. And if u get a f-body than you better get a manual that is the only way to drive a car.

I like'm both. Right now I have one of each; 97 Camaro/99 Firebird. I like the 3.8L V6. If I were you, I'd suggest '96-97 Camaro for that engine. Pre-96's have the 3.4L V6's. Not sure about when Firebird switched from the 3.4 to the 3.8L? Maybe the same year as Camaro (1996?). 3.8L has more HP.

I like the Camaro partly because it doesn't have pop-up headlights (one more thing to go wrong, and a little extra weight... don't get me started on power windows... why can't it be easier to just get roll-ups from the factory?? Power windows/locks/seats suck if you ask me.).

I kind of like the simpler styling of the Camaros, but I personally don't like the front-end styling of the post-'97 models. So for later model F-bodies, I'd get the Firebird. They're cool-looking too, even with the pop-up headlights... interiors are a little nicer than Camaros IMO (also... Firebirds have a switch on the ignition to remove the key that works better than Camaro's... I'm currently having a problem with my Camaro ignition key lock which is way down in the console!.... also, my Camaro's tail-lights leak though don't appear to be cracked... I had a short in the turn signal because the socket got wet!!)

Both Camaros and Firebirds converted in the middle of 95 from 3.4L V6's to 3.8L V6's.

As for this: "i say get a firebird, have the new styl front end put on it, and put a ws6 hood on it, (no one will know its a v6) :-D"

wait until he's challenged at the light.

I can tell you want to save on $$, so camaro would prob be best bet since they are more abundent...Try to get the V8 (LT1) you will avg. 20 MPG and your engine will outlast the V6...I have 3 friends with LT1s with over 180k miles, no major engine problems, the 4L60E trans did get rebuilt at 150k miles...my cousins V6 knocks, overheats and never got better then 24 MPG and only has 110k miles

oohh you guys and your v8s. Don't you realize that that is old technology. Invest in some forced induction guys. Firebirds and camarows are heavy. My friend with a supercharged 350z could smoke your american pieces...

Spare everyone mindless comments in the future.

And just what do you think a V8 could do with a supercharger??

a) Orbit your buddies car
b) Orbit his house
c) his kids and dog
d) half the other homes on his block
e) all of the above

EDIT: And ya Jet Fumes I'd spend the extra coin and go with the 5.7 - it will be more fun and sound way better. Only real problem might be insurance if you're young. Otherwise get an 8.

Both the Camaro and The Firebird are the same exact car with different body Panel and Interiors, They offer all the same options , same engines , same Tranny's , Same rear ends , You just have to take a good long look at each one and decide which one you think you will want to keep for the longest and to ADQM101 , I own a 1998 Z3 2.8 and 1996 Formula LT1 my Formula weights about a hundred pounds less than the 350Z and gets same gas mileage and I have eatten them by about 5 car lengths

I'd say get the firebird and the guy with the love toward the 350z tell him forced induction is crap and the 350Z couldn't beat a pinto.

i find it kinda funny how he specifically says no Z28 or Trans Am and than instantly people are talking about the Z28 and how he should get it. i agree but he said he wasnt gonna get one. anywayz i'd pick the camaro here. i like the design better, price is similar to firebird, not sure bout maintenance.

i hear you Firebird or Camaro i'm asking myself the same question, I made a thread on it, but haven't gotten much response so i'll look through yours because it has more thanks

a camaro V8 with forced induction could smoke a 350....especially if you put in an aftermarket suspension....it's unfortunate but most "muscle car" guys neglect the suspension and spend most of their money on the engine....you can make a fox body mustang into one of the most gorgeous handling machines on the planet...same with a v8 camaro....your buddy and his 350z better watch out on both the track and at the strip if he thinks he can take one of those monsters....

and for the firebird VS camaro...if it's enwer go with the firebird...if not just go with either....they're essentially the same.

simple as this...just get which ever one you like the look of better, or which ever you find a better deal for.

What someone should really do is get a TA or something... make it really fast, then make it look like a base model V6.. put the v6 hood on, v6 wheels, change badges, etc. Then when someone sees it they would be thinking "oh wow.... a V6 firebird... must be slow..."
then ya just rip them a new asshole

v6 hood and v8 are the same unless v8 is ws6. Super idea and all but no moron in their right mind is gonna spend money making their car look worse to be a sleeper.

I'd do it, if it had hail damage or something. That would be lots of fun. Hide the exhaust and use those super quiet mufflers. I've always kind of wanted a REAL sleeper, like a Stude or something. But in the end, it is like you said, wouldn't probably spend EXTRA $ for the look. Oh, and for the question, I vote Firebird V6 or not.

LOL i was supporting what you were saying right up until you said "watch 2fast 2 furious". But anyway its true....there's no replacement for displacement

As for the question, i'm currently stuck myself on whether or not to get the formula firebird. I've seen a LOT of camaros taken in at my uncle's garage though, in fact the most fast cars we see in teh dealership shop for repair are pre-97 camaros, mustangs, and oddly enough, cougars.

Anyway, I'd go for tyhe firebird if I were you, because they're basically the same car except the firebird looks 10x better
