hello my favorite people, i come to u today with a heavy heart...i must first lead u into the story..1 week ago i got my car back after spending almost 4000 on body work only, 4 hours later..i hit road kill on the way to the miami HIN and messed up the front..today, my birthday, my car engine decided to die BUT im not going to cry...ive decided, instead of spending mad money to fix my engine..im just going to replace it...so goodbye SOHC...now..my question...which engine should i get for my 99 civic ex? and about how much do u think that particular engine would go for? my uncle can install it so installation isnt really a problem..any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

a b16a or a b18c or b18b would be the easiest but they have to have the same wiring as yours which is obd2b to be the easiest swap

u know, that very question is baffling me...it drove fine on sunday..but on monday it wouldnt start..so i put more gas in it cuz it was on Empty...still didnt start..i had AAA come and bring it to a mechanic, and the mechanic said there was no compression in the engine and that it was either the timing belt (which i just had replaced 2 months ago) or the valves..they wanted $350 basically just to take out the engine so they could get a better look, thats on top of the useless diagnostic test they had already done..so, since they seem to kindof, in their own way of saying it, think its the valves..which is like $1k to fix, i mine as well get a faster engine than just getting mine fixed...since its already at 87k miles..anyways, a lil update, currently, i believe i think i want to get the b18(b) engine..LS that is...since i have an estimated budget of only $2k...with free installation thanx to my uncle..what else, besides an engine, am i going to need, and where can i get a good LS engine for relatively cheap, i hear they go for about 800 but hmotorsonline.com didnt have it this cheap...any other reliable websites?

hey CIVIC..when u say "easiest" how easy might that be...im assuming i cant just take the LS engine and stick it into my engine bay..and vuola!..i think?

you might need motor mounts new axles and shift linkinage (not sure which kind) but i believe that would be all

An LS engine kinda sucks stock... It gives a bit more kick over your sohc, but nothing phenomenal. Or maybe I'm just spoiled with mine, who knows.

yea, u are right, i originally wanted the H22, but i was talked out of that due to the expensive installation needs and additional parts.ive seen the specs for the b18b..bout 142hp and 127 torque...but im figuring, since the b18b is so cheap, i could afford to get some additonal parts for it...still isnt going to get me way up there..but for say.$2k i should atleast have 180 hp...not bad for a car that had all show, no go..and i would actually have an engine that starts up..unlike mine currently does...180 hp in a civic must feel quite nice?

More around 195-200, but yeah..
The b18b is one of the best Honda engines to turbo, if you're planning on going that far with it...

never in my wildest dreams did i plan to get my car to 200 hp..not to say i didnt want to..RICOCHET, what additional performace parts, in addition to I/H/E would u believe i would need to achieve the 200 mark?...and i did hear that turboing a b18b is a very good idea..one which i might actually partake in....geez, i spend waaaaay to much money on my car =-(

I was saying I have around 200hp. If you turbo your car you could easily see that and then some

edit: You think you spend too much? I've poured over $12,000 into mine, including parts I've put on then taken off, and parts that have broken. That and prolly like 300+ man hours working on it, another reason I could never sell her :) I was involved in another thread talking about engine swaps, lemme dig that up and paste it in here. Also check the mod's thread at the top about the complete swapping guide.

well, im going to have u beat after i do this engine work, seeing as i have spent over $10k mostly on looks....after adding many basic mods, and then turbo the car, i would hope for atleast 225 hp..hmm...that was a pretty helpful link, thanx, but u can boost a b18b to 12 psi with just stock internals? wow..not a bad deal if that is the case? i think im beginning to salivate over the idea of actually being able to beat people in a race =)

you can boost a b18b at 12 psi on stock internals with the right tuning (hondata)

Little info about rebuilding your motor instead of swapping out if you want to go that way. Remember this is for a serious block able to handle 600 hp and kinda customized for my application.

Some prices I got from Earl that does alot of motor work on the HT forums. That's where my built head came from.

The block runs $950 which includes final bore and hone. Figure about 10 days (or less) of shop time for the block.
Shipping is $50
If you want your crank micropolished and balanced by Benson, that runs $150 shipped.
Off the shelf CP's go for $460 but the size you want is not off the shelf. Figure $525 (with rings) and about a month's build time on those pistons.
Pauter rods run $695 and are in stock.
Full set of ACL bearings runs $100 and is in stock.

That's about 2400 for a fully built block. Figure about 1400 for a built head *crower stage 2 turbo cam, valve springs, retainers, cam gear, port and polished* and you come out to 3800 . Spend another 3000 grand for some turbo stuff and you have a motor capable of atleast 400 hp. Better get a clutch and some axles and don't eat to soon before driving.

So for 3k more you can have 200+ more hp than a swap. After the swap it'll cost a hell of a lot more than 3k to get it up to those HP numbers.

Just some info to chew on.
