D15B7 Upgrades.....

i want to upgrade my 93 Civic DX D15B7 so i have a few questions for anyone who can help me............
1. whats the best cam to use for the most gain possible?
2. will a compression change improve or decrease engine performance HP and Torque wise? if not, what will give me the best compression on 93 Octane with a mostly stock D15B7 engine?
3. best plugs? best wires?
4. best Throttle Body that can be swapped?
5. i have been told that a Y8 intake mani will be a direct swap and that a gsr or and LS throttle body can be swapped for better performance. true or false? and if true, which year for both
6. anything else i can add or swap to my DX engine which will creat more HP and Torque and give and all together better performing engine???(dont tell me to swap in a better engine, if i wanted to do that i wouldnt be asking for D15 upgrades)
i know this is probably alot of questions but i really want to upgrade the stock engine i have and any and all info would help, thanks ahead of time.

I've learned swapping engines is better than pouring perfume on shit, and both cost almost the same.

i just learned yur a nerd. If i wanted stupid comments like this i would have changed the topic to 'send stupid comments this way'. Unfortunately, the topic is about me wanting to upgrade the engine i already have, it has nothing to do with racing or shows or some stupid shit like that, i just want to upgrade my engine so it will perform better for ME not anyone else or against anyone elses car. Please stick to what the topic is about. lol i knew after i posted this, some moron would have to say something about swaps, even after i specifically stated i wasnt going to swap my engine out lol just goes to show how some assholes need to speak their minds anyways lmao

okay okay...calm down. ricochet knows his shit first off. look at his car. hes done the things to make it the best car for him. similar to what you want. theres a certain level of respect floating around AF and the people who learn to develop it, while ignoring those who they feel dont, receive the comments and treatment back...
alright, on to your d15b7: i have had a 95 civic lx (same as your car, with the d15b7) for about 4 years now. i love the car, so i know how you feel about messing around with a swap. to be most acurate, im going to answer your questions in order:
1. ive yet to find an aftermarket cam for ANY d-series engine...sorry, if you do find one please, please PM me with it. id love to see it.
2. this is where i strongly hint/suggest a swap. changing the compression requires new pistons/rings, which requires removing the d15b7 from the engine compartment. with the engine out of the compartment, why not take the money you would be using to upgrade for a new engine...get my point. also, you will find that this engine (stock or close to stock) actually runs better on 87-90 octane gas...YES, im serious. do some research.
3. unless your plug wires are in very bad shape, you will notice no power gain with aftermarket ones. although you will notice slight (maybe 5hp) increases in power with an aftermarket digital ignition from a company such as MSD.
...okay and as for the throttle body and manifold questions are concered...rediculous. those mods, after you spend the time and money finding/installing those parts, the gains are going to be somewhere in the 8-10hp range, and even with everything youve mentioned youre still looking at nothing more than 120 hp, up from the stock 107hp and 98lb/ft of torque...
you can be stubborn all you want, if 120hp is what YOU want out of YOUR car then thats YOUR problem. if you were wise with your money youd look into a b16a3 or the b18b1...both of which you should score for under $2000, and both of which have around 150 stock hp and much better capabilities than the measly d15b7...

1. i dont have that kind of money to do a swap........which is why im not going to do a swap.
2. what i meant with the cams is, ive read MANY times that an Si cam from the same year would be good for gains and would be a noticeable improvement in power and response.
3. i dont have problems with anyone in AF, i just get frustrated when someone says i should spend a few grand or so like its no problem. If i could do that, i wouldnt even be a member to AF, i would just have my car done the way i wanted it to be cause i would have the money to spend on it. Unfortunately i cant come into that kind of cash quick enough, therefore, i can only afford small things for the engine i have (this does not include a new engine and/or tranny). i have an AUTOMATIC 1993 civic dx that is stock except for the 18 inch Primax's wrapped in Kumho Ecsta Supra's, coilovers, an intake, new plugs, and a JDM (yes, its really from Japan) cat converter . i want to switch to standard, get a body kit, exhaust, and finish my interior that i started. this all takes alot of time for me and alot of time to get the money i need, thats why i blew up in the reply i wrote. lol i need things cheap i guess lol
p.s. what i really want is something different such as the JDM 3 stage VTEC D15 which boasts a decent 130HP and is used in the Ferio VTi's, but i cant find one for a few hundred dollars.

You can spend a few grand on little pulleys, cams, intake, header, exhaust, yadda yadda yadda, and wow you end up with a whopping 20hp gain or whatever. The reason I said swap is because I've been in your shoes, spent enough on my DX engine to turbocharge it, and I was never happy with it... even with nitrous. That's why I'm telling you to swap, so you don't make the same mistakes I (and thousands of other people) have done. Swap or turbocharge your engine. Also if you have big heavy 18" rims, that tears away all kinds of power.

cam, compression change, plugs, wires, Throttle Body, intake manifold...
just to change the cams and to build the engine for higher comp it will be at least 1000 for parts.
throttle body and intake manifold are also pricey.
i bet by the time you get this small amount of mods which honestly will only give you at most 40 hp more ( this is a very generous figure since I don't think you will be able to raise the comp too much) you will have easily spent close to 2000.
I don't wanna cause problems but honestly even a cheap ass b18a1 will give you better hp and torque than you will see with these mods, and I bet you could pick one up for less than 1000 with a tranny at a junkyard or something.

nope, i can get a 5spd tranny for like $300 and have the swap done for free, and done right. Also, i found a place where i can get the kit i want for around $400 shipped; and this guy i work with, his father does paint jobs so....your expected cost just went from like $2k to like $800-$900. the most costly thing so far is the engine/tranny i want which is the JDM 3stage vtec d15 with multimatic tranny and i just got quoted @ $2715 crate shipped from Tokyo, Japan. This engine keeps up with b16's. With a little effort on my part, could have this all by mid-summer...hopefully lol thanks for the info tho, even if i sounded like i was being an ass, you guys still gave me some good info.

what is the point in paying $2715 for a JDM engine, when you can go to a parts yard, spend $1000 or so for a good B-series (which consequently have very good aftermarket support, more than the D-series anyways) and still have $1715 to play with???
its DUMB to pay over twice as much for a lower powered engine just because you see "JDM" somewhere on it. If you get a JDM engine, you run the risk of not passing emissions inspection (if applicable).

spend $1000 or so for a good B-series
Please give me a name of the junkyard selling a B for $1,000... The lowest I've seen a B16A1 at a junkyard exceeded $1,500-$2,000 I've even seen 96-00 1.6 EX engines go for $900 with ECU's. If you find a B-series for a grand, do yourself a favor and don't buy it. 99% of the time you get what you pay for when it comes to engines.

Okay, you say you "don't have the money to swap"...the you turn around and say, and I quote
most costly thing so far is the engine/tranny i want which is the JDM 3stage vtec d15 with multimatic tranny and i just got quoted @ $2715 crate shipped from Tokyo, Japan.
I mean, stop fooling yourself, get real. okay
1)Stop being suck an ass to Ricochet and others who suggested a swap. First off, putting that in IS A SWAP. it requires the tranny, motor, and vtec ecu. Stop kidding yourself, you said first you wanted to "build up the D15B7. The parts you want alone wil be more than a grand, and that's assuming you do the install. Then you say you want to put this in? This IS NOT building up your stock D15B7. This is called swapping in a JDM D15 vtec for $2715. Buy getting htat, you ARE INDEED AFFORDING A SWAP. Furthermore, for $2715, you can certianlky get a B16A or a B18B1 in there. I don't care what you think, either of those motors will that that D15vtec stock for stock, and when you decided to build them up, have way more potenial.
2)As mentioned above, you want and seem to be able to afford a $2715 swap for a.....Vtec D15?? I don't give a shit where the motor is from, Japna or not. Who cares if it's a Vtec JDM motor. JDM is overrated in that sense. Just cuz it's JDM doesn't mean it's cool or good. Don't beleive me? Check out what the "JDM" direct power system" turned out to be. Just cuz it's from Japan doesn't make it a good product.
3)As enluded to in the above statement, if you can afford $2715 for a JDM D15 Vtec motor, you sure as hell can afford to swap in something else besides that motor, like an LS or a B16A.
4)Doing a mini-me conversion would be cheaper and cost less than the $2715 you intend to pay for a jdm d15 vtec. You'll have $$ left over to mildly mod the motor afterwords, and the HP output will be similer to the jdm d15 vtec...and for a lot less.
5)If you are stuck on getting the D15 vtec or building your own d15b7 up, that's your call. However, stop being rude and telling us bullshit like "I can't afford a swap, I am poor." Don't make dumb lying excuses. If you can afford $2715 for a jdm d15 vtec, you have just there also afforded a B16A or B18B1. The price is similer, the power putput a lot more, and the LS will blow the others away in torque. Now, if you want to build up the d15b7 or get the d15 vtec, that's fine. It's your money, and your car. But stop kidding yourself and giving us BS excuses like "I can't afford a swap. If you can afford to swap in a d15 vtec for $2715, you can afford to swap in a B-series as well. Either give us real reasons and don't make excuses, or get over it.

Your welcome..I'm glad to know you were thinking the same thing...I just couldn't take his crap anymore, I've been reading and following the thread, and finaly was like...oh geez...can't afford a swap, but wants to pay $2715 for a d15 vtec? I don't care if it's jdm, vtec, or whatever....$2715 for a sohc d15 swap is absurd. And good point, since he has all these "free hook-ups" why the hell is he willing to get raped on the engine price? As for a "place where I can get a kit for $400 shipped," 93DXon18s, you get what you pay for with kits. It will have gaps, no fit correct, and require considerable molding to make it fit and look right, to elimnate the gaps, etc. That is assuming it's a fiberglass kit, if it's a urathane kit, you may have a stronger material, but you can't mold ureathane, your stuck with it, so if it fits like shit....second, your buddies dad may indeed be able to paint a car, and paint it well, but does he have the extensive knowledge needed to install a fiberglass kit and get it proper fitment, the knowlegde needed to mold it so it will fit correct? Not all people who do good body and paint work can do this...I am not saying he can't just food for a thought...now, you don't need to give me some long-ass answer about "how he can do this and that," as I am aware already that you most likely will say that regardless. And, to pheurton-skeurto, I agree with you, and good points. Where's the "free engine hook-up." All he's getting for that price is a "free I got raped on the charges."

first of all u retard, i never said i was going to or can afford the D15 vtec swap, i said thats what i really want tho. i dont have the money to swap any engine which is why i just want to try to build mine up. i never said i was poor i just simply stated i didnt have the money right now and couldnt get it quick enough to afford a swap. read the entire fucking post u stupid asshole, then try to crack on me and make dumbass remarks. second of all, $525 of the $2715 quote was for shipping cause its from Tokyo....it was like 1800 for the engine and the tranny was like a little more than 300. my friend said if i got the engine and the tranny and everything else i need for a swap, he would do it cause he owes me a favor anyways, bite my ass and dont even bother responding to this cause you're just gonna waste your time. learn to comprehend the words u read and then you'll realize that what i said wasnt what u said i said.

first of all u retard, i never said i was going to or can afford the D15 vtec swap, i said thats what i really want tho. i dont have the money to swap any engine which is why i just want to try to build mine up. i never said i was poor i just simply stated i didnt have the money right now and couldnt get it quick enough to afford a swap. read the entire fucking post u stupid asshole, then try to crack on me and make dumbass remarks. second of all, $525 of the $2715 quote was for shipping cause its from Tokyo....it was like 1800 for the engine and the tranny was like a little more than 300. my friend said if i got the engine and the tranny and everything else i need for a swap, he would do it cause he owes me a favor anyways, bite my ass and dont even bother responding to this cause you're just gonna waste your time. learn to comprehend the words u read and then you'll realize that what i said wasnt what u said i said.
...and i am, whatever you say i am, if i wasnt, then why would i say i am...
sorry, didnt understand that either...lot of idle threats and insults. funny thing is, no one on here ever once insulted/demeaned/even flamed on you until you flamed on us. all that we were trying to do was give you some of our experienced advice, seriously. guess that backfired. have fun on AF, if you keep this attitude up, youll get no positive responses along with a slow car that youve poured a bunch of money into to go with your bad attitude.

Okay, I am sick of NOOBS liek you coming in here with a big-ass mouth, disrepsecting the forums and acting all big and bad. This isn't about us being of "vet status," you asked a question, and we gave you our advice based on our expericne and knowlegde...as pheurton-skeurto said...

That being said, cut through the threats, insults, and other BS you are shelling out and show some respect to the other member's of AF. You don't just join up and think, "I am cool, I am going to go and call all the other member's, new and vet's, names and insult them." An attuitde like you have is a quick path to get no help from anyone on this board, or to getting banned. Get a life, stop telling stories to cover up your last story. Stop insulting us when you run out of storys. If you don't like out advice? Take a hike and ask it somewhere else. No one is forcing you to come in here and flame us.

first of all, i never said i was 'cool' or anything like that. i asked a few simple questions and stated that i did not want to do a swap. the only responses ive gotten basically are about what.......doing a swap. i dont know how many times i have to repeat that i DO NOT WANT TO DO A SWAP CAUSE I DONT HAVE THE MONEY. if i had the money i would do one but since i dont, im not going to. i just wanted to make my car run better and thought i could get some good advice about doing it cause i know all you people have alot more experience with these things. i didnt know that the only advice i was going to get was to swap, lol thats exactly the response i WASNT asking for. i dont know alot about imports and i am trying to learn about the best ways to get the best out of my car. i dont have a bad attitude and i dont think im all high and mighty. i just wanted advice on what i asked about, not advice on how i should just swap. you people want me to swap? give me the money and ill do it right then and there, but for now im trying to get my engine (d15b7) running better cause the person who owned it b4 obviously just drove the car and dint do a damn thing to it so now i am trying to fix that. dont stereotype me because im new and dont have as much experience as you guys do. all im asking is, if u cant answer my questions (which had nothing to do with a swap) please dont respond unless they actually have to do with the questions i asked. i understand that a swap is alot better and will give me more power and such but righ tnow i want to stick with the engine i have, thanks

Okay dude, I am going to be honest with you...the D15B7 is one of the weakest D-series motor's made...the block is thin, and the pistions and rods will snap with much more HP added....If you really want to add power, beyond the I/H/E, you'll need more than just a throttle body and intake manifold...and these parts alone will run you well over $500, and it will be fun finding them for that motor. Also, you will need to rebuild the block, high c/r pistions and stronger rods, a new cam will help...and you need to fortify the block somehow (re-sleeving is an example)...it's not cheap to get extra power out of any motor, espeically one that is weaker than most of the commen honda ones...if you play your cards correct, you can push about 140-150 n/a hp out of that motor, but not much more...that will require a complete re-build...you looking at $400 for pistons, $400-700 for rods (depending on the quility), like $1200 for sleeves at least, lets say $250 for a throttle body and $300 for an intake manifold...now that's $2500 on the low, $2800 on the high maybe, for just the parts...that is the cost of a swap, and you've only EQAULED it's power output stock. And this doesn't include the cost of the new clutch and flywheel set-up you'll need for the tranny to handle the newfound power...actually wait, you have a AT DX...that's the motor/tranny that came in my car originally, a 92 AT DX, there is no way you will get able to get the AT DX tranny to hold that kind of power, without sending it to level 10 for a strenghten and re-build, you'll blow that AT QUICK OTHERWISE. Honda auto tranny's are weak, all this may well eqaul or exceed the cost of swappin in a manual conversion and doing the whole clutch set-up route...All this still doesn't factor in the headwork, which would be springs, retainers, and valves, not to mention a good port and polish and a vavle job to get good flow, you'll need to do this all to get the head to be able to handle all this new power. You say you want to get good power out of this motor, but don't have a lot of money...I am sorry, there is NO WAY you will signifcantly gain suffiecent power out of this motor safely, cheaply. Even if you'd rather do this than swap, if you can't afford a swap, you can't really afford to build the motor properly. Now, seeing the costs to do this are so high, you can see why people suggest SAVING your money until you can afford to do a swap. The n/a power output BASE from a swapped motor will be the end n/a power output you'd get out of the DX, and chances are it will be cheaper to swap in the end, plus, you have a lot more potenial to play with later...that why we are saying save your money until you can afford a swap. We're not trying to be asses, it's logistics. If you still want to build up that DX...go right ahead and save, I have listed above some of the things you will need to gain hp and performance from the motor safely. Remember though, and this is not just a saying, these is no free power with cars, this espeically holds true with Honda's. Adding power, whether via building your motor up or swappin a new one in, is not cheap. You say want a way to make your motor run better, just give little performance, because the pervious owner abused it. The best and cheapest way to do this is just replacing it with good qaulity used stock parts (new will be spendy), still it may be cheaper to source a used, lowest mileage you can find, D15B7 and put it in, Chances are it will be in better condition, which will give you a little extra kick, since the motor will be running like it is supposed to, vs badly cuz it was abused. This would "make the motor run better,"which is what you want, and for a used D15B7, it shouldn't cost more than $500-600 I would think for the motor, as it's not very popular. That will be less expensive than anything else I can recommend.

Thanks for the votes of confidence there guys!! Yea, that'd be cool if I lived closer to Ohio, we could all meet up then sometime. The closest I've been to there is the fact my sister was born in Columbis in 1974, which is before I was born, lol. Any of you ever been to the west coast? If I ever go out that way I'll make sure to hit you guys up.

my friend hadda 93 Civic DX H/B wit spoon exhaust, chikara header & AEM Intake w/ a lil weight reduction and was beating most Civic EX's. it aint a bad engine. but unforunatelty doesnt compare to some of the other hondas engines. luckily since Bisi Ezerioha carburated D15 that hit 9's broke out aftermarket support for the D15 started to grow.

LOL...now that wouldn't make driving in Columbis very fun. Yea, unfortunatly, San Deigo isn't exactly close to Portland. I have family in LA, which is a heck of a lot closer to San Deigo than Portland is. I might visit some family down in cali next summer, but if I did, I am not sure if it would be the LA area of the San Fransico area, as I have family in both. If I end up visiting LA, it's not too far from San Deigo. I think we should all try to procure some passes to the 2004 SEMA show in Vegas (next november), and meet up there and go check it out. That'd be tight, I've always wanted to go to SEMA. They have some phat stuff to check out there. So your buddy's die hard DSM, huh? It could be worse, at least he still drives an import. Anyway's so you ever been out to the west coast? Last time I was down in San Deigo and LA was in summer 99, and San Fransico was before that, so I'm hoping to visit at least one of them this summer. Well, if you ever get down near Oregon/Washington let me know.

It's all good. I am glad I could help. Well, an LS (B18B1) is a great motor for turbo apps. It can handle upwards of 12psi on a stock block when properly tuned. Also, if you get an LS and want to go n/a, you could LS/Vtec (ls block, vtec head, like b16a) it if you know anyone or a shop that knows how to vtec an ls. It's not terribly hard, but like anything, someone without experience could botch it up. A B16A is a good for n/a apps.

That'd be nice. I had thread on Wet Sleeves versus Dry Sleeves awhile ago that would have been a great thread to sticky also. A mod would have to make this sticky though to really save it for easy access though.
