Please Help!!! My 2002 Explorer has a problem idling, it fluctuates between 1000 and 100 rpms and has been in for repairs 4 times with the same results...the standard answer is "We are flashing the computer with software updates" (Ford Service Center) vehicle works great for 2-3 days then repeats. Spoke with a colleage at work who also owns a 2002 and is experiencing the same problem.

Still under warranty? Yes? ask them to replace PCM. Is there a lemon law in your state, read up on it. Also you may want to call the Ford Customer Assistance Center, number is in your owners manual and tell them your problem and ask them to send their regional service rep to inspect your car. You may consider asking Ford to buyback the car.

Hi daledagee. We have an 02 explorer w/ the same problem. We have had it in and out of our local dealer at least 7 times since 1/02. Each time they have reflashed the system and this did not solve the problem. The truck is currently at the dealer and has been for over a month now. They have replaced the PCM and had trouble downloading the updates. They went to the manufacturer of the PCM and had to get directions for a step by step programming of the PCM. This worked! However, our service writer called me tonight and the truck runs worse now. There area Ford Rep. is coming to look at it on Tues. We hope to resolve this w/ him then. It has only been two years and a thousand headaches. Did you have any luck w/ yours since posting?

Somehow I think it's the dealer service dept that doesn't know what they're doing. Murphy works there. There's too many Explorers running around that run fine without any reprogramming necessary.
A friends' '02 has no problem. My '00 has no problems.
