i would strongly recommend you have professionals install your stereo if you have a new cavalier... im not sure what year it started... but the stock stereo runs the air bags and the dimmers.. so it needs to be relocated to the trunk

The radio doesn't have to be relocated to the trunk....I have a 2001 that i replaced the factory cd player in and I sold the factory deck. You can go to 12volt.com and look up what the factory colored wires are and u also will need a wiring harness and install kit.

it depends on the year... i know you cant do that with an 03 or 04... you have to keep it

Also on an 03 or 04 it controls your shift patterns and oil pressure if I am to understand correctly. Mine is in the trunk too. I did it myself but it was a pain in the ass. I would suggest having a dealer doing it...

sorry it's the12volt.com and the link is http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/vehicles.asp
Just change the year and the manufacturer to whatever vehicle you are looking for. It only goes to 2000 and for the cavalier the last year that was available for stereo wire colors was 1999 but it was the same for the 2001.

Me again and as of July 1st I can now confirm the fact that the factory deck in my 2001 cavalier didn't control the airbags. My airbags went off fine when i hit a deer on my vacation and totaled my car.

I know and seen the articles that started this stupid rumor. It happed to a guy in california that didn't follow GM's recommended Airbag power-down procedure for the airbags. The airbags will hold a charge up to 15 min after the battery is disconected. So this tool crossed a wire and the bags blew him into the back seat.
I had a local shop tell me the same thing when I bought mine. I waited for this "harness" that was supposed to come out from Soundgate (www.soundagte.com) and it was taking forever. So I called and talked to a sound gate tech. Basically if you remove your stock head unit the only thing that won't work is your door chime. NOTHING else is controlled though the head unit. Now when I did mine the only thing was they didn;t have a harness for it to hook up to the factory plugs yet but that was solved with using the 94 buick harness (can't remember off the top of my head if thats the right year) and all you have to do is add a 12v Ingnition Wire.
Man some of the "myths" I'm reading about these cavs on this forum I havn't seen in about 2 and a half years......
