Useless Weapon???

I don't know much about the rest of you on here, but over the past few years, i've steadily "moved up through the ranks", as it were, in my area. I went from being the noob all the way up to knowing 80% of the people out here involved in the scene, and having one of the fastest cars as well. For those of you who haven't experienced it yet, this may be hard to grasp, but do those of you with truly quick cars feel pretty much useless now??? In a lot of ways, i feel that my car is a useless weapon. I stumble across a worthwile race maybe once every two weeks. Of those, i win probably two-thirds of them. I'm a street racer, i want to race! Does anyone else on here feel the same way? I mean, i figured building a fast car would find me more races but it's quite the opposite. I used to just roam the streets and highways at night looking for a race. it is a drug for me in many ways. i guess there is a silver lining, though. as a result i don't race as much anymore, which keeps everyone a little safer. opinions???

just get involved in scca races like solo1 or autox...they are legal, you get to meet some very good drivers and they push your skill to the limit much more so than lining up at a light

that's true, i'm doing a few track days soon. one of my good friends instructs for the Driver's Edge school. the problem is that the highway or the industrial park is the place i enjoy it most...

I used to do the exact same thing ... I used to say I was "going out hunting".
... you are correct, it is a drug. I have found a new drug ... ETs.
I am obssessed with squezzing every ounce I have to get a faster ET, which is why I am proud to me in the top 10 of MR2 1/4 miles and shwoing the least amount of HP of the big boys.
I am #8 on here:
http://www.mr2ownersclub.com/quartermile/
Look at my HP compared to the others ... that is my new drug.
I completely understand the drug of street racing, but I am cured.
It is not worth it in my mind (look at the street racing page on my site).
I am responsible enough now to know that what I have built is too dangerous to race on the street.

I don't get involved in many races at all. I will rarely race anything that doesn't stand a chance of beating me. Its not fun to win something that you should win.

True but I also take pride in the fact the I very very carefuly picked the parts and carefully assembled and install everything on my car to make it as fast as it is.

and i agree and that is another thing to be proud but i say skills are even more important...a good car is just something to complement them

I prefer to know that my car is the fastest one out there. And while my skill is an important factor, it's my 200hp advantage that makes the biggest difference in the outcome of the race:biggrin:

I find it much more satisfying beating a car that has 100 - 200 HP more than me.
There is nothing impressive about beating up a little kid in my book.
Taking on a bully's father, now that is something to brag about.

hahahahhahahahahha.. .Man.. seriously laughed for real. good stuff, Self.
I figure I shouldn't have a car with so much power due to my immaturity, but I just want something quick and TRICKED OUT.

I get all types of people trying to race me.. must be the 4 cylinder image and fiero. Some moron with a 35-40th anniversery camaro said he saw some fake fiero with formula decals and fake dual exhaust.
Little does he know the fiero came with V6's and mines not normal, he wants to race next spring he's going to shit bricks racing an 11 second lowly pontiac :lol2:

Im glad there are actually people on here that can relate to how i feel. at first i figured i'd get flamed or something (im new, and ive seen a lot of hating in here against street racing) but its all good.
i can totally relate to having fun beating people with more power. no one understands why 3g rx7's are so fast. i just say that the wankel engine was designed around a glitch in the physics of the matrix, lol. either way, most vehicles need about 550hp to hang with my ~360hp, so i know the feeling. just wait til i'm putting down ~575!!!

I don't care how good of a driver you are. Good Luck making up for 200hp less. I'll take my extra 200 ponies and smile the whole time about it while your in my rearview mirror. LoL
But for me I think it really has to do with the fact that I get a bigger thrill out of doing the work on my car and seeing the results at the track than the driving of it.

this is why i like autox...its a very good place for us low Hp guys to take on the muscle....
as they say - forgot whose sig this is from - drag racing is for fast cars autox is for fast drivers....i don't mean this as a flame but drag racing is more for guys like you Gt stang that like to show what their pride and joy can do after you put some sweat into it while autox is all about finding that perfect curve line and that perfect weight transfer
it all comes down to preference

Exactly. I have said it a million times: I only race one person ... me, my last best run.

Exactly. Which is why I do both with Hyde :D ... thinking about doing an SCCA Hill Climb event this year as well.

Well first off let me state that my last post the beginning of it was just a lil bit of a joke based on Self saying having 200hp over ya opponent is nice. It wasn't aimed at anyone directly.
I know that power to weight has a lot to do with who will win in a 1/4 mile race. Also ya torque curve etc.., etc.., just like hp is not the deciding factor of a 1/4 mile race niether is power to weight. It's just another thing added to a big equation.
I don't remember my engine dyno numbers off my head exactly any more. My hp was a lil shy of 600hp, the peak torque was around 550ish. No chassis dyno time yet but it's going through a manual so use normal drivetrain loss. My weight would be a guess although some things were added a lot was lightenend. Best guess maybe 3,000 wit me and gas in it but I think it might be less. Best ET was an 11.2XX, that was my best time after 3 runs and those are the only runs I were able to get in with this set-up. Me with more practice or a better driver would def be able to dip into 10's with this combo.
AutoX, I like autox and use to do SCAA events in my 93 SHO back in 98'. Here is my problem with autoX and SCAA things. Just like that guy who is trying to squeeze more hp to get a better ET. The guy into autoX like myself would add better shocks, bushings, brakes, etc..., But whether I'm doing autoX or 1/4 mile car it is my daily driver or nice weather driver I should say.
I'm not trying to out turn some1 or out brake them or proving how hard I can carve a corner doing 60, on the street. So my car being my daily driver where am I gonna find the most enjoyment for my money and time spent? Going from a stoplight next to some1. Although I prefer to do it at a track I will admit sometimes I do let my ego get the best of me on the road. Or just hopping on the highway to work and letting it rip wide open to 75mph and getting off it. Building a 1/4 mile car that is also is ya daily driver let's me enjoy my work more than if I built a car for autoX.
I'm not busting on autoX.... you can go look at the Mustang forum. I have a post up comptemplating about strippin this car and building a road racer Mustang for American Iron. I do love it an enjoy it but it's just not enjoyment that can be felt on a daily basis like a 1/4 mile machine.

Good post GTStang and I understand a lot of what you are saying.
I am trying to build Hyde to be able to be competitive at the 1/4, autocross, hil lclimb ... and whatever else comes along. Obviously that means I have to compromise on somethings.
I do have different rims/tires for different venues and my suspension is adjustable.
And I realize the night/day difference between your 11.2 and my 11.8 ... but if you are at 600 HP ... then you are nearly doubling my HP which gets me back to my original point of prefering to take on the bigger dogs :D
I would feel much more pride in losing closely to your low 11 than I would winning over the 13-15 second cars that always seem to line up with me. Regardless, I am still primarily interested in my own personal best ET.
