as promised here is my progress thread of this rather different type of model kit. 117 pages of parts (thats almost 200 separate parts) mean that this will certainly be difficult...probably more difficult than a plastic kit. iv started on the main structural bits, but got bored so i started on more stylish things like the interior. i probably could have spent more time making absolutely sure that every glued joint was perfect but it hasn't come out too bad so far. anyways, here are the pics:
underside shot of the front "sub frame" showing the very substantial looking parts coloured in with black marker.
http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1072016849.jpg
this shows the main interior tub so far and the top of the front sub frame. you can also see the brake discs that i have coloured with a silver pen (i would airbrush, but i cant see the point for a paper model)
http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1072016872.jpg
another shot of the interior tub. this reveals some of the slightly exposed joints and you might just be able to make out the third pedel i added as the kit was for an automatic but im changing it back to a manual.
http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1072016893.jpg
this in one of the brake dics coverted from a flat piece of card to vented, metalic looking discs.
http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1072016911.jpg
oppinions apreciated. im not one of these people that will get upset/angry if you point out something that iv done wrong...so be as truthful as you can.
this is deffinately going to be harder than a plastic kit

LET ME BE THE FIRST TO SAY! THAT IS HOT!
I too downloaded the plans and might do it as a bit of a brake from the plastic kits (no money to buy my white paint, lol)
keep it real!

It's great to see someone having at go at this..it's harder than it looks! I had a go at building a Yamaha bike some time ago and never finished it. It was damned had and gluing the joints accurately is pretty important in some places. I might hav a go a biulding one of these myself sometime as the idea of a paper car appeals more thaqn the bike did. :icon16:

looking good... i attempted one of the paper ferrari's i found, but it turned out pretty badly... i would strongly suggest using thicker paper for this... looks like you've already figured that out tho :)

thanks for all the encouragement :)
heres a little bit more of an update. iv done more on the interior, the centre arm rest is done (boy was that hard) and the rear seats are done. they are ok, but they could be better. i know there should be alot more shape in the lower cussion, but i couldnt do it without it looking really bad, so i just left it relatively flat. ill have to get a grey pen to get rid of some of the faily large white gaps. i still have to put the head rests on the rear seats, then its onto the fronts. i might make some racing bucket seats for the front if i feel adventurous enough :evillol:
http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1072130307.jpg
SchuberT, yes, i chose the thickest card i could find. unfortunately it might be a little too thick, but its better than been too thin. i might re-print the body parts on photo paper which is a little thinner and nice and shiney...yay :iceslolan

I'm building that same car too, and I think it's not that hard if you have (lots of) pacience :D
If you haven't already, just wait until you get to the brake calipers part...Boy is it hard!
I'm also thinking of getting started with this one:

ok, for those keeping track theres not been much progress since the last update. i have been busy prototyping a new seat for the car.
iv decided on the sparco corsa:
http://www.demon-tweeks.com/resources/images/detail/S_S886F.jpg
it will have a carbon fibre effect back (although in real life the corsa is not sold with carbon as an option) and will have dark grey 'fabric'.
prototyping is almost complete, just 2 more parts to design then ill post some pictures of it. hopefully i will have a fully complete example of the seat by tonight...just in time for the xmas drinking

ok, prototyping is pretty much done now. Here's some pics and a little bit explaining each of them.
http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1072284780.jpg These are a couple of my early prototypes for the seat back/frame. the one on the left was the first, very simple one. then on the second one (right) i added more shape mainly in the rake of the back of the seat.
http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1072284804.jpg
now this is the 'finished' prototype. i say finished, but as you can see its missing the side cussion on the right hand side (from the drivers point of view) and the side holes for the harness are also missing. these will be sorted out though. because this is a prototype there are all sorts of lines over it from my rough working and of course, because the prototype is not going into the car, iv not spent ages building it perfectly. there are quite a few areas that need to be patched up before i make the real thing, but its close enough to give you an idea of what i have achieved. From the rear shot you can see a large black area. this is my carbon fibre effect that i printed out and stuck on to see what it looked like. unfortunately the camera has not picked up the subtle pattern. in total (when the right side cussion is added) the seat is made from 6 parts. i also need to make the mounting frame, but that should be very simple compared to what iv done so far.
comments welcome :)

yes petter...heres some more.
unfortunately its not going too well. i may have to re do most of the dash because iv just totally messed it up. its way too fiddly and i just made too many silly errors that made it look crap. im posting what little extra work iv done. anyway, pics...
dash isnt finished, nor is the seat. side cussion on the right needs to be added, joint between head rest and left side cussion needs to be completed, lower side cussions need adjusting, seat mount needs to added...loads of other things. in other works its nowhere near finished.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=500/62166ftoprehols1-med.JPG
a shot showing the back of the seat. a bit of the back is missing, so needs to be added. the shine on the seat back looks good though. the very fine CF pattern does not show in the photo. the opened glove box can also be seen. the latch needs adjusting so that it closes flush. from this view you can see just how bad the dash is. at least its only paper and i can just print out new parts.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=503/62166ftoprehols2-med.JPG
this shows the open glove box. you cant see it, but i have built a box behind the hole, and i will put little things like a haynes manual and sun glasses in there.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=503/62166ftoprehols3.JPG
finally this is an extreme close up of the dash binical. unfortunatly the camera decided to focus on the background on both of the shots i took. ah well at least you can see that i have replaced the black dials with a chrome faced unit. you should also be able too see the piece of acetate i have added to simulate glass infront of the dials. ignor the VERY messed up bits you can see. this will all be replaced.

ok, 5 hours of late night progress and this is all i have to show for it. :disappoin . im really trying hard to make this perfect now, but its just sooo difficult with card. especially with the card im using which is just too thick. im trying to work out a way of making the white cut edges less obvious on parts like the head lights. i tried a marker, and it just bled through, and pencil just doesn't do the job. im fairly happy with the quality of the work iv done, the door was relatively easy...the head lights were not however. i was sitting there watching tv (VH2 if you must know :p ) with tiny bits of paper held together with tweezers waiting for it to set. which reminds me, im using a new glue now called copydex. the pritstick i was using before just was not strong enough. infact i had to do a number of repairs where the old glue had just not stuck. the only problem i have with copydex is that its very rubbery once its set, and it makes a bit more of a mess. im been very carefull though to make sure all the messy parts are not visible once the body work is completed.
Any way thats too much talk. progress pics :iceslolan
right side door card. might do some more detailing. mesh on the speaker? a rounded pull handle?

the door card been test fitted with the very unfinished interior. looks good.

and the headlight. only the grey part will be visable once the body work is fitted so all those messy tabs wont be seen http://www.automobileforum.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1080638428.jpg

yeah, paper should only be for drawing :iceslolan
i started this as a 'quick-ish' project over the xmas holidays while my airbrush was out of use. its obviously gone on a bit more. its almost thereputic - cut, fold, stick, cut, fold, stick...
no paper cuts yet, the card im using is just too thick to do any damage. the knife however is a different story. no gushers, but a few close, err, shaves ( :cwm27: ) ...
There is no way I could do that, I hate paper, Paper is for drawing on. And Simon, you should know that, youre from the S&D forum too, but its a great unique model!
How many papercuts have you gotten so far???
yeah, paper should only be for drawing :iceslolan

I'm subscribed, I'd pay to see a paper v6. Great work, better than my first three plastic kits! LOL
