PS2 issues...

I know there are a lot of people out there, including three people which I know, whos PS2s' give a "Disc Read Error" when loading games. Unfortunately, this recently happened to me. I found a guide online that tells you how you can fix that, but the bitch was that my PS2 is a much older model than the one in the guide and so it did not work. (if you need help, the guide is here: ARS Tech...PS2 Disc Read Error Help (http://www.arstechnica.com/reviews/003/gaming/ps2/ps2-1.html))
Does anyone have an online tutorial on how to fix this problem on an older PS2? Has anyone here experienced this problem? I hope I can get some answers because the last thing I want to do is buy a new PS2 and have that break on me in two years. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the link RyanGiorgio. I've been having a few problems with disc read errors on my PS2, and it absolutely refuses to play any games with blue discs, so, I've just bought another one ( a silver PS2 ).
If I find any guides on how to fix the problems on older models, I'll let you know.

I had an Xbox for all of two days then took it back to the shop. The joypad is huge and uncomfortable to use .. the games I had with it ( 2 or 3 car racing games ) which I was told were excellent, turned out to have the crappiest graphics I'd ever seen ( and much worse than a PS2 ), and the one game that everyone told me was simply brilliant ( Halo ) I thought was absolute crap.
I suppose it's down to individual choice, but for me, the original Sony Playstation was the console to have, and now, having played on Xbox and Gamecube, the PS2 is still the winner for game choice and consistantly brilliant graphics.

both systems have their strong points. x box overheats too easily but ps2 takes so damn long to load and it has to load more frequently.
they came out with the S controller like a week after x box came out. it fits in your hand almost as nice as a ps2 controller. ps 2 has a lot more games but x box has its share of good games especially this year. x box has a 8 gb hard drive so there's no need for memory cards other than to carry info from one system to another and you can load your music cd's to the hard drive and play them during all racing games and most sports games among other types.
i don't know how you can dislike HALO, you may be the only one, i stil play Halo to this day. i have all three systems and the only one that is really a waste of money is the gamecube.

Im still buying one; gotta have:
1. resident evil 0
2. resident evil 1
3. Zelda
Besides, it's really not too bad a price(at least I dont think) I wouldnt have to be doing this if those bastards at sony and capcom had put the resident evil games out on teh PS2 :disappoin

is your PS2 one without the cooling fan? If so, my cousin has a similar problem. I'll find out what he does with his.

Try positioning the ps2 upside down. It might have inherited the laser problems exhibited in the playstation one (early) series. With electronic products history tends to repeat itself with complementory technology.
Positioning it upside down seems to remedied the problem for the playstation one, might work for now.

I swear dude the only reason i bought one in the first place was for RE0(which is a real good installment in the RE series). and don't forget metroid that's a great game too. honestly though buddy, i would just rent the system and games from blockbuster for like a week. mine just sits there, i don't even know where the RF thingie is and i don't really care. it's definitely not a bad price but how much faith can nintendo have in a system that costs as much as a gameboy. i wouldn't be surprised if they stopped making the GC's soon. then you'll be stuck like i was with my genesis/sega cd/32X back in the day when sega took a break before starting the Saturn.

i haven't had any disc read errors like that with my PS2, but i keep hearing this issue with PS2's burning out their lasers from playing DVD's...don't know anyone who has had this problem, and should that matter if it can be fixed under warranty?

hey man i had the same problem with my ps2 i pulled the laser and almost brought myself to order a new one ($70) but decided to do what blindside suggested, i bought an x-box and havnt had a problem yet, i dont buy the fact that u bought an x-box and took it back 2 days later, the x-box is great sysytem as is the ps2, infact i think its unfair to compare the ps2 with the x-box/gamecube becuase if u think about it, the ps2 was intended to compete with the dreamcast then the dreamcast died leaving it with the x-box/gamecube which are a generation ahead (somewhat) of the ps2.

Well, it's true :) I really wanted to like the X-Box, but it didn't impress me at all.

For me, the X-Box didn't live up to expectations. I agree though, that they're both great systems, as each has its supporters :)

True, but the aim of the X-Box was to compete head on with PS2, and knock Sony off the number one slot. Unfortunately, X-Box has failed, and for a number of reasons none of which I'll bother to go into.

By older PS 2 i asume you mean bought/manufactured close to the original PS2 release date. If so my brother did that tutorial (more or less) on our (which was bought the first day it came out) and it works just as well as new.

You and I must be the only people in the world who think that. Xbox does have better graphics/power, but it just doesn't have the games. I'll take a dated PS2 over an x box anyday.

I have both PS2 and Xbox and I like them the same. They both give me troubles. My first PS2 had the disc read error and so i just bought a new one. But I like my Xbox b/c of Halo and other football games that u can have four people play together at once without having to buy a multi-tap. But as well as the PS2 the xbox has it's down falls. One is the controller's joysticks break easily and they aren't cheap. And another thing the xbox doesn't have as many games as the ps2. But like i said your best bet is to buy a new generation ps2 or wait until 2005 or 2006 to get the newest playstation.

hhhmmm.......It's a common fault among earlier PS2- means that it can't read DVD-Rom's
Don't get an XBox- it's basically a 2000-model computer in a ridicuously oversized case- with bugger all decent in the way of games- AND it costs money to play online- and a fair bit at that....

Thanks a lot for all the replys. I think eventually I will just buy a new PS2. I just hope the same thing wont happen to it after two years.
As for those who recomended buying an Xbox, I'm going to have to turn down this recomendation for I prefer the games released only for PS2. Sure the graphics are a tad better, but all it is is a computer, like Jay had said. Thanks again for all the replies.

I just wanted to know what makes the Xbox a "computer" and why the PS2 isn't one. I've heard a lot of people say this. Is it because it has a hard drive? The PS2 would be a much better machine if it had a hard drive. No BS memory cards to buy.

Well since this threads come back to life let me answer your questions. First if you want your ps2 to read the disc just use a vertical stand or hold it upside down, and hit the reset button, mine loads everytime doing one of those.
Second they say the xbox is a computer because its specifications are more "powerful" than ps2. And ps2 does have a optional hard drive along with a optional keyboard and everything else, you can even use your ps2 as a computer with a ps2-computer-kit.

The PS2 disk read error isn't hard to fix. Go on techtv.com and search for "PS2 fix" or something along those lines. I did, followed the step-by-step instructions, and fixed my PS2's Disk Read Error like 2 months ago and haven't had any problems. Took me maybe 15 minutes to do.
