99 Blazer / shift indicator / fluctuation

Wierd problem.
Typically, when I shift my 99S10 Blazer into gear the indicator light in the dash will highlight the currently selected gear. Recently this particular indicator is jumping around and not reflecting the correct gear as well as flickering on and off.
The rest of the lights are working perfectly. I can work with this but I am concerned about when the wife is driving it. Sometimes is shows that you're in park when actually you're in reverse. No good.
I am wondering if this a known issue and how I might go about troubleshooting and fixing it.
