What is the matter with my truck? The back doors will not open from the inside! What is up with that? The child safety feature on both doors are in the "unlocked" position! Anyone have any problems with this? Anyone have a solution! PLEASE HELP!

My rear driver side door has that problem. I took the door handle assembly apart and found that there was a piece of plastic that broke off which keeps the handle from going back and forth. All I have to do is go and get a new handle assembly from Ford and it will be solved, but I'm too lazy. Just take the door panel off and play around with it. It should only take like half an hour to find out if this is the problem.

The problem is in the interior door handle. Take the door panel off and then there are 2 screws that hold the black handle on. Be careful to not bend the rod when you take the rod off the back. Turn the handle over and look at the plastic gear that moves when you pull the handle. The part that always breaks is the lowest gear tooth that you can see. Take a flashlight and you'll be able to see if there is a break. These parts are famous for breaking all the time and are pretty cheap to replace yourself. Tom

One more thing.....if anyone has an Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer and needs to replace the Blower motor resistor, this part is different from regular explorers due to the Climate control. Ford had to redesign this part since the original OEM part goes bad. They cost approx. 110.00. Make sure your parts dealer understands this is for the Eddie Bauer Edition or else the one you get won't work

The inside door handle may have snaped a tooth but that wasn't the initial problem. I bought a 97 with that problem and the handle had snapped the tooth. It still wouldn't work with a new one. I pumped a bunch of oil into the door latch mech. Lightly worked the handle about 30 times and then it started working again. The door handle pushes on a thin steel wire. Any resistance from the latch and the wire just bends. Forcing handle only breaks the teeth. So the real problem is dried out grease and corrosion.

Same here...have replaced the driver side back door inside handle twice. Walked up to the Ford parts counter with the broken one in my hand and all he asked was ..."right or left side". He even knew the part number without looking it up. don't know of any solution until it is redesigned and Ford isn't going to do that now.....
