Cavalier help

ok I tried starting my car this morining but it wouldnt fire. it tried to and when my friend looked it he said there might be water in the distributor. Is this a good diagnosis? Also where is the dristributor on my car its a 1990 Chevy Cavalier thanks in advanced

ok, to my knowledge, i do believe your car does not have a distributor. Im pretty sure you have a Coil Pack, distributorless ignition system. Follow your ignition wires from the spark plugs to the location where they plug into on the other end. If the wires are pluged into a Distributor cap they will be in a circle pattern. if they are pluged into a coil pack system they will all be inline. Now lets say you do infact have a distributor, yes, water under the cap will definately cause a no start condition. replace the cap and rotor with new units available at any autoparts store pretty cheap and easy to install. that is probably the easiest part of this problem to explane how to fix. If you replace the cap and rotor and still no start, or you have Coil pack system, your problem may lay deeper in the system someware. first you would want to check for spark,... pretty simple, pull one of the wires off a spark plug, use a screw driver and place it into the wire. hold the handle of the screwdriver over a metal part of the motor and have somene crank the car over. if you see spark, thats good. remember the color of the spark, blue/white spark is a good strong spark, yellow/orange/red spark is really weak spark, and would consider replaceing the ignition coil or coil packs. If you get spark, next thing would be to check fuel pressure, requireing you to purchase or rent a fuel pressure tester. Make sure in purchaseing a fuel pressure tester you know the fuel system on your car, TBI and Fuel Injection require different adapters. also besure to get the fuel pressure specs to make sure your within range. If all this fails, you may need some other type of sensor i.e. cranskshft posistion sensor (which would also cause a No spark condition). Before the car died, was there a check engine light on? if so pull the codes, you can get code information on the net pretty easily on both how to get codes and a cross reference for codes. hope some of this helpes, any more ideas pease post as well.
