Noisy Lifter

Hi, I have a 95 M3 that appears to have a noisy lifter. I want to replace it myself, but am leary because I don't want to get in there and find out I'll need a bunch (or even just one expensive) specialty tools. Is this a job your above average everyday home mechanic can perform or is the best bet to bring it in to the pro's? Any and all ideas/insights are welcome.
