1.9 liter engine switch

I have a 1996 and a 1991 Escort. The 96 engine is damaged and needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Will the 91 block work in the 96 escort if I switch everything else? These are both cars that will be used for my auto shop class at a high school where I teach. I want to find the cheapest option. I am not against rebuilding the 96 engine but I do not think the head can be saved. I think the rod broke and the piston slapped against the head, I will know for sure when we get the block out. It goes slow because the students are doing the work as a learning experience.

Thanks,
David Wilson

As far as the block goes it's the same.
There was one change, and that was 91-95 is OBD1 and 96 and up is OBD2. The only differance you'll find with the motor will be the throttle body and TPS. Just reuse the throttle body so you dont have to mess with the differant sensor.
EGR could be differant also.
To make sure every thing matches up with the EGR just reuse the intake and exshast manifold.
Oh, almost forgot, the throttle cable braket is a bit different to, just reuse the old one.

If you want to be a little cooler of a teach, pick up a 97 2.0 Escort motor and drop that in, it has 110 hp instead of 88.

You might find my page helpfull, the last page is good to know stuff also:
