1966 Nissan Silvia

Okay, this is the first completed model I've posted here so go easy on me :iceslolan

This for those not familiar with it, this is the first generation of Nissan Silvia from 1966, model CSP311. The real car was designed by Albecht Goertz and they were all hand built on Datsun Fairlady Roadster chassis. Less than 500 were were made and today they fetch big money.

This started out as a 1/24 motorised kit from Imai, one of the "Super Driving" series. This kit isn't very detailed and has no suspension or engine but is nicely moulded and fairly acurate. The body required only minor preperation for paint, amazing on a kit as old as this. The chrome in the kit is nice but the headlights are poor. I used some Modelers lenses but it didn't improve them much. The paint is a Nissan color and is straight from a Halfords spray can :iceslolan I didn't want to go with the stock wheels so I used some from an Arii GC110 Skyline kit. The tyres came from a Revell Tuner 510 kit. I also made an exhaust from aluminium tube as the original was pathetic  I lowered the suspension a bit but not too much as I wanted to keep it looking old school. I still have a little polishing to do and I need to do something about the Silvia emblem on the trunk lid (like paint it or foil...not decided which..either is going to be hard as hell to do :banghead: ) I might add some valve stems to the wheels as well yet.

Ungodly cool. And, I think, a first for this board. I love the stance, the wheel & tire package, the color, the foil work.

It's just a sweet model through and through.

Wow! Beautiful! The paint is perfect. The wheels are a perfect choice. The entire thing is just magnifacent. All your models are a welcome break from the cutting edge new school set that are all over, and their quality helps make that that much more pleasant to look at! Great work! I can't wait to see more, espescially that crazy Auster!

Thanks for the encouraging words guys... I wasn't to sure how something like this would go down here :sly: A lot of the things I'm making are a bit odd as I have so many old kits to put together. The next one to be finished is far more modern than this..well 1980's anyway :iceslolan

For the first time on this model I used some Kosutte-Ginsan to do the window surrounds rather than foil. It worked great but I decided to try and clear coat over it which dulled it a little..oh well :iceslolan The emblems are foil though. I've always hated foil as i could never master it. Until now. I had always used Modelers BMF but for one i got hold of some original BMF and what a difference! The modelers stuff is junk :iceslolan

Kosutte-Ginsan is absolutely incredible stuff! If you have never tried it ..do. You won't be disapointed. It's by far got the best chrome finish I have ever seen. Beteen that and proper BMF I can't see me using much chrome silver paint any more

By the way, this kit is still available from HLJ I think. Either that or the Aoshima one is. I had a thought just after finishing mine. As the real car is built on a roadster chassis, I could have used a Fujimi Roadster kit as the base and had full engine and suspension detail. Shame I didn't think of that earlier :screwy: :iceslolan

Oh well, too bad for the full engine. But hey, no bid deal, not to me anyways. It's always nice to see old skool kewl on the board.

i love the old school cars! i am eventually gonna build a gazelle of some sort, which isn't too old, but def. old school!

Justin, there's a few Gazelle and Silvia models still available. Most of the old ones are the S110 (3rd generation)...the only S10 (2nd generation) I've seen is in 1/28 scale. I'd love to find a 1/24 version of the S10.

One I want to do is the Aoshima Gazelle Silhouette (http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?AOS32046) which looks awesome. I already have the Silvia Silhouette (http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?AOS30912) which looks like it will build into an amazing model even if it is kerbside. Fujimi make a coupe Silvia RS (http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?FUJ03488) but the kit with the most potential I think is the Aoshima Gazelle Open Kogure Version (http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?AOS29251) . I think you could build something pretty cool from this one :smokin: In fact how about using the interior and dash from this in the Silhouette body to make a street version? :eek7:

Wow! Thats awesome! I love the rims, though I would personally do the centres a solid color rather than chrome, but thats just me, it looks fantastic. An awesome job.
Also, I've seen a couple 1:1's of them up close, the build quality involved is nothing short of craftsmanship, awesome thing.

Very Cool!
Can't wait to see the 411 when its done, too, BTW.

I was torn between leaving the spokes chrome or painting them myself. In the end i didn't because I was worried that the huge expanse of chrome rim might look odd without. Also I did a little research and found that these rims generally have bare spokes but the recess down the sides of the spokes and around the lug nuts is painted so I followed that. On mine that area is dark mettalic grey but it's so small it's difficult to see in the pics. Here's a 1:1 rim...

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/105911factorykingfk.jpg

The 411 is a real struggle :grinno: It's made by Master and is a reproduction of a 1960's motorised kit. You can just imagine the quality and detail..or lack of it  I decided to build it as a Japanese police car. So far I've sourced the police parts and decals and a nice set of plain steel rims for it. The windows are a real problem. They are made from thin vacuum formed plastic and whatever mold they used as a former was rough as hell so you can barely see through them :disappoin Mind you with the standard of interior detail it has that might not be a bad thing! Once i get the paint on it I might post a thread. I am kind of reluctant to do progress threads on most of my odels as I build stuff so incredibly slowly :iceslolan

Me 2. Only one I've kept pace with is the R31 drifter. BTW, how's the auster, seen paint yet?

Eddie, those 1:1's? Are they missing something, like lug nuts? Are they four lug? Would they fit my Corolla? I figure with the silver lip, that deep looking dish and some black spokes, they would look at home under there.

No, the auster won't get paint until the chassis is complete. I will have to trial fit the body on the chassis many times yet so it's to risky painting it yet as it might get damaged. Works on hold for a week with that while i build a model of a GC110 Skyline to give my dad for christmas (he owns a 1:1 GC110). I'll get some time to do more on it before the new year though.

Not sure what you mean about the 1:1' rims. That picture came off of a Japanese auction site. I would think your Corolla will have a 114.3mm (4.5 inch) PCD...in which case there are loads of rims that will fit it. All older Toyota, Nissan, Datsun, Mitsubishi, and many other 4 lug Japanese cars have that pattern with the exception of Honda and most Mazda. There are even a few US cars with that four lug fitment. I think some 80's Mustangs have it. There is a website (http://kmhafer.datsun510.com/wheelFAQ.htm) with a huge list of rims to fit Datsun 510's (most of which would also work on your car) Some are aftermarket, some OEM. Take a look it might be useful. You occasionally see Panasports on ebay to fit Datsun 510's or Z's...a coat of dark grey mettalic paint and you'll have that RS Watanabe look on your Corolla! :evillol:

I checked out the Fujimi Datsun Fairlady Roadster chassis and amazingly it would fit the Silvia body shell with very little work! Damn  now it looks like I'll have to build another one some time :iceslolan

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/1059110910_1021.jpg

The Fujimi kit is pretty detailed and although it would technically have the wrong engine (it's 2.0L and should be 1.6L) it would make a really nice model. I will do it some time but it'll be built as a race car as the only Silvia kit I have left has a damaged front bumper which I can't use. I think it'll be something like this...

Great Model RatDat! I'll have to find me one of those.
Only thing wrong with them is the round bagde on the side pillar. Real Silvias never had that.
