Onstar tech help

I am trying to replace handset on 1st gen onstar system, however when i plug the new handset in it is not recognized. do i need to reprogram the box in trunk to recognize new handset or could the new handset be bad and they are supposed to plug and play? anyone with tech knowledge please help!

No reprograming needed, they are plug and play.
