I'm new to this site. I have a 1994 silverado 6.5 turbo. Out plowing on Sunday and got this clanking noise in the rear of the truck. Metal on metal sound. Its constant, not just on starting. Any suggestions?

You have to share a little more info on truck, is it a manual or automatic tranny, and is it 4WD? When you say "not just on starting" , are you implying that it makes the noise at a stand still (out of gear - standing still) as well? Or, are you in 4 wheel drive?

Its an automatic transmission, 4wd. The noise happens when driving. It happens in 4wd and 2wd. It's just a constant clank. My fear was a transmission problem. Had a new tranny put in it last February, so I really cant see it being that. I'm taking it to the mechanic today. Wish me luck :) and thanks for your replies

Could be a u-joint, transfer case, or something in the rear end. good luck, and let us know what it was.

Well it ended up just being a dust cover. My mechanic bud bent it a bit and the noise is gone. It was a quick fix which kinda surprised me, this truck and quick fixes dont generally go together. Thanks loads for your time and have a Merry Christmas
