What's the top speed of a stock 96-97 Camaro Z28 and how does the car feel at that speed? By the way im a 17 year old who is looking for a used car in the 7 to 9 thousand range.

dont buy a z28, you will lose your license in a month. I'm 22 and I have a hard time behaving

It depends on ur transmission, my friend has a 97' z28 with a 6speed and top of 5th gear at around 5,000 rpm is about 145 mph, then u shift into overdrive 6th which takes u to about 3,200 rpm and u stay at that speed pretty much unless ur going down hill w/ a tail wind...My automatic shift into 4th gear at around 140 mph and that takes the rpm to about 3,800 rpm, it pulls to about 150ish and stays there...since ur looking for a 7 to 9 thousand dollar z28, there arent many w/ low miles in good condition, but i got mine which is a 1997 Z28 white with red cloth automatic all stock w/ 65,000 miles for $7,988...thats about as good as it gets on the regular good condition cars. good luck :)

with stock gearing (which can differ) i've seen a trans am, which is basically same car, with a couple minor mods clocked doing roughly 160mph and the tack is running close to the shaded red area right before true redline. now change the gearing and reprogram your ECU and with the power you've got to lay down and the areodynamics i'd bet that you could reach maybe close around 180mph, maybe more..... but that's my opinion.

I don't think anyone will be getting to 180mph without a nice power adder like a blower or nitrous. Even corvettes have a VERY hard time getting up to those kind of speeds.

Any truley stock LT1 powered car will top out at about 155 or lower. I have 2.73's and I top 3rd gear out at about 135-140, and the OD gear is a granny gear, so it's not going to pull much more than that...maybe 5-10mph. With a stick you could prolly get 155-160mph with a tail wind...

rumor has it at the sites i've checked 159, or maybe that was ls1, anyways, its fast enough(i know its fast enough for me) unless i've got more than a quarter to go...

My 97 Z28 convertible with an A4, and 2.73 gear (stock rims and Goodyear RSA's) did an honest 160mph. Car was totally toped out, in 4th gear at 5400rpm's, couldn't pull the last 100 rpm's to redline.

The car was kinda floaty, but not as bad as I expected it to be. You really had to concentrate and not overreact to bumps in the road.

the speedo only reads 155, how do you know it was 160? :)

because at 5400rpm's with a 19in tire a 0.70 overdrive gear and a 2.73 rear gear, equals 160mph.
And also I hit 155 at 4500rpm, and pulled up to 5400rpm's. :)

i seriously doubt that any kind of street car can reach 180. unless you put some serious engine work into it, id have to see it to believe it. the NASCAR platforms run 180 and up around D-ovals using the SB2, which is designed to go that fast. those cars are built for speed and every inch is designed to go fast. i just cant see a production car with useless parts and creature comforts able to run with a NASCAR monte carlo

vipers arent an eight, and ive never seen a z06 pull 180 around a 56 degree bank and be able to accelerate out off the turn. however, im not sayin its not possible im sayin id have to see it to believe it, if someone's got a vid that would be awsome. id love some one to prove me wrong on this (and thats not supposed to be sarcastic). go down to your dealership, drop 60 grand and go out and hit 180, thats why im lookin forward to that c6 to see if its good enough to be true

There's a video of a guy making a top end run in a Z06, I'll have search LS1.com for the link to the video. When I find it I'll post it up.

7-9 thousand range. You can get a 91 Z28 for at the most 3,000 and fix it up real nice and stuff.
