2000 Rodeo Check Engine Light

The check engine flashes on intermitantly, stays on and and also goes off. At the same time the gas gauge acts oddly, going from a steady reading to varying significantly. Somehow all this seems to happen on an uphill grade (although not all the time, when exiting my driveway. Maybe it's just a cold engine.) Took it to AutoZone who scanned it and gave me some fuel related answer (bad gas), but I doubt that's it. I've got about 47K on it, the V-6. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a faulty/failing fuel tank sending unit giving erratic gas gauge readings. This will set off the CEL. There are few OBDII codes related to sending unit issues. Isuzu supposedly put out a revised, new & improved sending unit for 2001+ :uhoh: (only fits 2001+) The good thing is, this will be a freebe fix for you for 10yrs/120Kmi if you are the original owner, or 5yrs/60Kmi if you are a subsequent owner. Out of warranty, the sending unit can be pulled to adjust the electrical contacts. It will work again for 30-40Kmi & then act up again when the contacts get weak. G/luck

Also have similar problem. Car when accelerated the CEL light flashes, and also the speed won't pick up, but the RPM goes up. Once I get past a certain speed it's fine. Just when I accelerate. For example when I'm accelerating to 60MPH, the light will flash all the way to 60MPH. Also my car has some fuel issues it seems. Before I use to get gas milage of about 250 miles per tank, now at 150 miles the fuel light turns on, but when I go get gas it still has lots of gas in it? What could this be? Could it be a fuel level sensor of some sort? Please help. Thanks.

The dealer initially told me it was not covered by warranty. I called Isuzu and they followed up with the dealer who is now waiting for the factory rep to reply. Apparently there is some issue that may cover it. I understand some Rodeos had a one piece fuel sender & pump, and others had the same parts separate. The feeling I get form the dealer service manager is the item should be covered. In my case they may have only replaced the sender, and the pump should also have been replaced. Does anyone know if I can now return for the fuel pump replacement?

So did you pay for it for now and they will pay you back or what is going to happen w/ it? See I know how those guys are and I don't have time to haggle with it. Most people have busy schedules and it's very difficult to fuss w/ the dealer. Can you give me the phone number of the factory rep and possibly name? I'd really appreicate it. This way I can talk to them before I even take it in maybe. Thanks.

I paid about $216 for it and found Isuzus's 800 number on their web site. The dealer is to get back to me. I am still waiting, but I understand with the holidays it may be difficult to reach the rep.

FYI, I had the same problem maybe 3 months ago with my 2001 Rodeo LS. But, I kind of shrugged it off, not wanting to pay to get the sending unit fixed. Then I ran into Tranny trouble, brought it to Aamco, he told me he talked to Isuzu, the tranny trouble, if from normal wear and tear was under warranty, even though the normal warranty ran out, so when I brought it into the dealership, I also mentioned the gas gauge. Both were covered under warranty and I didn't have to pay a dime to Isuzu.

I had the fuel sending unit on my 99 Isuzu Rodeo go out at around 60K miles. This is a common problem. Being in a small community at the time of only around 3K people I was able to ask the ones who owned other Rodeos about the problem. I also ask the service manager at the two dealerships in Kansas City Missouri at the time. It tends to happen on the 1999s to 2000s normally the V6 but there sometimes is the L4s will have it. I drive the 4Cyl. 2.2L engine variety. I had the CEL on for a year with no satisfactory results from dealers or mechanics.:banghead: I finally got ticked off enough:mad: to call Isuzu when they tried to give me to a "case worker" who was unavailable I badgered the guy who wanted to transfer me for the "quick fix" and the answer was that the fuel sending unit off of 1998s which is about $50 at the dealer fits on 1999s and 2000s. The supposed one piece fuel pump was really the pump then the sending unit two pieces. After the replacement of the sending unit by a friend and I. The Rodeo has not had that problem since and I now have 107 on my Rodeo. This just goes to show that the dealer mechanics only know the fix that is going to cost the consumer the most money while fixing the problem that occurs. If you tell them that the sending unit is for a 98 at the dealer they will tell you that it doesn't fit on 99 or 00. They are wrong do the repair yourself and you also save yourself anywhere from quoted labor at $300-400.
