what about a maxima? can i add more horsepower later? what kind of aftermarket upgrades are available? what model should i be looking at?

if you're looking at new vehicles, and an EVO is in your price range, then look at the g35 6 speed. it's RWD, and stillen already has an s/c that boosts hp to around 350, with very modest boost

Interesting hop from a Neon to a Maxima. All the cars you listed are all smaller cars with 4 cylinders. Are you sure you're wanting a bigger car?
If so, the gen 4 seems to have the most aftermarket stuff. For those cars, we gotz performace cams w or w/o springs, supercharger, turbocharger kit(s) w/intercooler, aluminum flywheels and pulley wheels, Y pipes, midpipes and cattbacks(multiple), air intakes(multiple), and chips. Then there is the MEVI which is a story unto itself. I think we're still waiting on headers. There are a few suspension upgrades available, but it will never corner like a small car. I think that all of the non-cosmetic stuff. Oh, brakes. We have a few of those, both slotted and drilled. Uh, yeah we got game. Not Bulls with Jordan world champions game, but playoffs at least.
I'm like you in the fact that I don't the car everybody has. I'd rather fix up the car nobody would expect, then coil up like a snake waiting to strike. There are some sleepers out there with MAXIMA on the rear trunk.

If you are buying new, then why not look into the 350z? If buying used, then you should know that the 4th and 5th gen Maxs do not have independent rear suspension. It is really not a good car for modding, especially when you are talking about getting those 4bangers. You only get a small selection in aftermarket parts. I'm planning on jumping ship myself.... Trade in my 2000 Max for something like the 350z or the WRX STi.

Thanks a lot everybody. that really helped me put this whole thing into picture. i was thinking about the weight of the maxima. i'm use to driving a civic, so this may upose a problem. i was also looking at the lexus is300. i think i'm at the point now that i want to go get groceries in the thing, but i want to do it hella fast. my jeep can get me anywhere off road. the bottom line, if i aint gonna win, i don't want it. thanks again for the sites and advice!
cheers!

maximas are the way to go. They have reliable engines ( most of the time :) ), they look good, they are fast, and theres plenty of passenger room. Plus many mods to get. www.maxima.org
