I have recently purchased a 2001 Silverado.
Previous owner stated that he unbolted steering wheel shaft under the
hood to grease. at same time his helper proceeded to give steering wheel a good spin....unfortunately when bolted back up the airbag became disabled....fuses are good but airbag is disabled....have permanent disabled airbag light on instrument panel...any ideas or help would be appreciated.....

the sir coil is broken, will have to remove steering wheel and lock plate to replace, make sure the air bag fuse is removed, i would also disconnect the battery for added precaution, make sure the wheels are pointed straight ahead before replacing the coil to prevent breaking the coil ribbon again.

I too have a similar problem. I have a 2001 1500 HD that was totaled in an accident. However, the airbags didnt deploy. The truck is completely repaired but I cant get the light to go off. I never pulled the steering wheel, but I did have the entire column out of the car de decompress the crush sleeve thats built into the shaft. Is it possible that it recorded info from the accident even though they didnt deploy, and it just needs to have the codes cleared? Or do you think there is something in the column that is broken? Is there only one sensor on this vehicle? I only found one in the front.
