Problem with drum brakes!!

I have an '87 Suburban and I decided to replace the rear drum shoes but I've been running into a problem. I replaced the shoes and drum on one side but I'm having a problem with the other side. Seems like the brake shoe assembly cocks to the right (front) when I slide the drum over the shoes. I have the brakes adjusted all the way in and I've torn down the assembly 3 or 4 times switching left to right but I can't seem to get it right. I've tried putting the drum half on and trying to pry the assembley so the studs will go through but no luck. I replaced the wheel cylinder and both plungers seem to go in enough for it to work - I'm out of ideas and not sure what to try next. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve.

Is the parking brake in the "released" position? Or maybe the parking brake cable on that side is frozen...just a thought :).

Make sure the shoes are in the proper position. Smaller shoe on the front, larger shoe on the back.
Next, check the strut that runs between the shoes to see if the shoes fit into the groove in the strut.
Make sure the park brake release cable is not frozen or adjusted in such a way that the shoe assembly is in the "applied position"

I think nit might be my emergency brake, it seems like it might not be released all the way. I guess it's stuck and I can't figure out how to release it. I've engaged the emergency brake and released them several times. My truck is an automatic and I never really used the emergency brake but I'm pretty sure they were in fine working order before I took them apart.

Try prying the P-brake lever back. Make sure the cable isn't overtightened. If the cable is hanging up, replace it.

One other possibility is that the shoes were intended for a larger diameter brake drum. Anytime I have purchased shoes for anything, there were all sorts of questions asked about letter codes on the drum, shoe width and diameter, etc. The parking brake issue could be resolved the cable is slack. It is also possible for the self adjuster to stick, allowing you to believe it is fully retracted. Food for thought... Ray
