I was going to change a friend's original brake pads (00 Rodeo, 110K miles) and was very surprised to see they still had plenty of life left. How long are you guys seeing before they need replacement?

Genuine isuzu brake pads do last a LONG time. They are about twice the price as aftermarket parts store pads, but well worth it!! When you need to replace'em do yourself a favor & buy the isuzu ones (they come with the grease & shims as well).

Changed the front at 100k, rear a couple of thousand later. Real quick job on the '97 Rodeo.

I have 88,000 miles on my '98 and still have plenty of pad left. This surprised me, too. I was sure I would have had to change by now. I just check now and won't change until they're ready.

My brakes are starting to squeel...especially if I am braking in reverse....I have drums on the rear and I have to use my e-brake b/c I park it on a hill. I assume the brakes are original since it has 51K on it but would it be time to change? Also, when not braking, it seemed to be making a sound as if some of the brake was still applied on the right hand side. Kind of a rotating friction sound....obviously the brakes b/c when I applied the brakes it would disappear or squeel. Any advice.....
PS....I found the pads alone for $51 on alldiscountautoparts.com.....are these good prices....I would like to do the work my self so if you guys know of any guide books I would also much appreciate it.

shrumph- you likely have a dirty caliper slide that's not allowing the brake pads to float properly, causing one or more to stay pushed against the rotor. Every year or two you should pull the pads to clean & re-lube the slides (with silicone brake grease ONLY!). If you need new pads, do yourself a favor & only buy genuine isuzu pads. They are ceramic & can last pretty close to 100Kmi. Your rear drums are usually maintenance free for a long time (alot longer than 51K), but it's not a bad idea pull the drums to check them out too.

I too have drums in the rear on my 2wd 2000. One of my drum brake squeels from time to time to (more so when it is cold out). It has done it since the truck was new so I have not done anything to it yet. I have 47k on my oem pads, but I have only been able to check the front ones. I have not been able pull off drum. I guess I net to back the brakes of via the access hole in the rear of the drum.
So I'm still thinking about taking my truck in and having the brakes inspected and have the fluid bleed to (helps to stiffen the brakes up) give me an idea of what the rear brakes look like.
a Joel is correct if you planning on purchasing new pad buy OEM. Many other isuzu owners complain about squeaky brakes after having non OEM pads installed.
And like Joel I have read plenty of reports of folks getting at least 70k or more on there original pads. Call the folks up at St. Charles (see my FAQ at the bottom for there number) and get a quote and/or have them ship them to you (free shipping), and set them on the shelf for when you need to replace them.

Does anyone know who makes the OEM pads. I doubt they are directly made by Isuzu, but maybe. I see some at part stores that are called OEM but are they truly? Just trying to save a buck if I can get them at a parts store and save the stealler markup.

98K on my original set; probably would've lasted longer, in fact, still had 30% of wear left, however, I pulled a heavy boat a lot then, and didn't want to chance it.
FWIW, do not waste your time with brakes from places like Autozone, checkers, etc. my 2nd set of brakes came from Autozone, and I only got roughly 30K miles before they were GONE totally.

I changed original front pads at 94K last year, easy job.
I used Raybestos ceramic pads $42(was 20% off) and lifetime replacement warranty. So far so good, no noise. Well I think I am good for at least 4-5 years, may be even never do it again.

I just had an inspection today and to my disbelief it failed. Front pads down to nothing, the pads are 22 months old. Moral of the story; I am getting OEM pads(called Merlin earlier).

When you get them see if there is a mfg name on the box. I am trying to find out who makes them for Isuzu. Thanks in advance.

iskiuskiweski,
Like I thought I would do, I forgot. In regards to your wondering who makes the pads, I am of no help. The box does not have much writting on it. All it says is Isuzu. Maybe they are made by Isuzu, I don't know, but there is no manufacturer on the box. There is also a GM logo on the box.

I just had the brake pads replaced for the 5th time since I bought my 2002 rodeo. My brakes squeal, and intermitedly, when I put on brakes, they bounce and grab and do not stop immediately. This has been going on for the last 2 years. Any ideas? The 3 different mechanics think it's all in my mind!- I also replaced rotors-they were worn totally uneven.

I would only stick with OEM parts. I got 72k out of my rears and my fronts are going strong at 76k.

that seems strange. . .generally speaking the front brakes wear much more than the rears -- are the rear brake pads on the isuzu's smaller/thinner than the fronts? could that explain it?
thanks,

Same here, my rear brakes wear faster for what-ever reason.
My original brake-pads front/rears lasted 93k miles, I only changed them out cause I thought it was time, they could've gone another 10k or so. We were getting ready to tow our boat over some pretty mountainous country and didn't want to chance it.
I made an idiotic mistake in installing Autoparts brake-pads as replacements. With that set, the rears were completely gone at only 15k miles. Went back to OEM front/rears bout 2yrs and 30k or so ago, still look new.

i guess the cheap parts store has a faster wearing formula for brake pad material? i always thought semi mettalic was semi metallic in all markets? i guess not? if you do buy the autozone semi metallics (with the screw the customer formula) i would go with the ones that have life time warranty.
on my 2000 i have 4 wheel disc and i also go through rears twice as fast as front? anyone care to guess. no problems breaking and no sticking? maybe it is just cheap pads.
why do stock pads wear so long? Are they ceramic?

Think it also depends on luck of the draw, too.
Reason I say that, is my 1st Rodeo, my '91 V6 would go through brakes/rotors like they were going out of style, until we put some HEAVY duty brake-pads on there - don't remember what brand, it's been far too long, but I know we had to order them.
My 2nd Rodeo has lead the same lifestyle, same drivers, but is only on it's 3rd set in 10yrs, and the rotors are original.

I think they are ceramics. I've had decent luck with Pep Boys ceramic equivalent. I had to change back pads early due to a sticking caliper pin wearing only 1 of the 4 rear pads prematurely. That was 2 and a half years ago.

that would explain it if they are ceramic. my fronts are still original at 67,000 but on my second set of backs. i replaced the backs with semi metallic and they create alot more dust. i think when the backs go again i will get o.e.m. or experiment with aftermarket ceramic. the back pads are also sitting at 30% with 20,000 miles on them. so they were definetly a step backwards.
don't get me wrong i don't mind semi metallic for my beater camry. just because it has alot of miles and don't want to spend to much. but the rodeo is still nice enough to go 1st class parts.

I've been happy with the Satisfied Pro ceramic pads I have on mine. No idea about how long they last, I've only had them for 10k miles. But, boy do they stop good! Not much in the way of brake dust on the wheels either, an no noise cept when I'm slowly moving down a steep hill offroad.
When I changed out what was on there after I bought this truck the front and back both looked OEM and all 4 were worn down to less then 1/8" at 88k miles.

Yeah for stock pads and rotors.
I finally needed brakes on the front end, it just started to grind and I did not hear the wear indicator at all.
191,500 miles on the original set of pads and rotors, I know because I bought it new. LOL maybe the rears in another 60k?
The rotor which did not hit the backing plate does not look like it has more than 20k on it, still flat and smooth with no lip on either rotor.
