93 Jimmy Instrument cluster lights

My last light in my instrument panel burned out finally. Problem now is after I went to all the work of accessing the burnt bulbs..they were next to impossible to pull out.When they did come out,they left bits of the glass end from this bulb type and some wire from them inside the socket.I cleaned them out, but the new bulbs dont seem to sit very well, and do not work. I bought cheap Canadian Tire bulbs. Did I need a special tool for bulb removal, or do I need GM bulbs? The fuse is fine. I did not have a volt tester to check the sockets,but one bulb for the seatbelt light still worksd from before, so I believe power is at the sockets.Hate to pay GM to change them for me. Help anyone!
