I have a 93 escort 1.9L. Driving along one day car takes a poop!, no start,no power to the light yadda yadda yadda. The main power fuse under the hood is blown, so i wrap it with foil drive home 2 blocks. Install new fuse, everthing seems ok. take car out again, 3 blocks later im without car again. When i get it home i try to use foil to check whats going on, BIG SHORT!!!!!!!!!!!!! The main power conection shorts out if touched. What could cause this, i have looked for visible shorting of the wires along the harness clear to the alt. nothing visible... Please help.

Me and I'm sure many other people here could help, but need more input.
Is the fuse poping for the starter?
Does it pop when you start it, or driving along?
Look for green crap, it cause extra resistance, which in turn makes extra amps.

Oh don't use foil in place of a fuse, BAD IDEA

Once I had this guy with this alternator that wasn't charging, he checked it with a test light and it lite up, so he thought the wire was good. I pulled the insulation back some and it only had one strand of wire left, gee no wonder why his battery was dead.

More resistance means less current.

Pull off the big red wire on the altinator and let it start and run off the battery and see if the problem goes away.
