Electric Problem 75 dodge Pickup

We just had our engine rebuilt and added a new altenator to it.
Here is my problem, we hooked the altenator up like it was originally, and it burned out the middle field wire, melted it to pieces.
According to the diagram the middle field wire connects between the voltage regulator and the ballast resistor. Then it goes from the ballast resistor to the ignition 1 (run) wire.
I discovered the short was from the postive current from the ignition 1 wire, and the negative current from the field wire. How can this be the correct way it hooks up??? If electricity travels the path of least resisance then it will short every time.
I check the book and it states the ignition1 (run) wire should have current to it, but the ignition2(start) wire shoud only have current when in start mode, this is not the case 2wire has current when the key is on when it should only have current when in start, and it is getting it through the electric control box from the ignition1 wire.
Either way, I can not see how the hot wire and the negative wire can go together here is a picture of the diagram.
I included some + and - to show the short, the only difference my truck is from this one is the Ignition 2 wire comes off the left side of the ballast resistor. where as this race car has a butten start and no Ignition 2 wire.
