Our A-C Compressor went out recently. We replaced and recharged it, but once again the compressor clutch is in the process of going out. Also, the engine rattles under acceleration and it gets horrible fuel mileage, around 11.7 mpg average. Any ideas?

You could be looking at big problems. Not a very reliable motor. Pull out the distributor and look at the distributor gear and see what kind of condition its in. The cam is the weakest link on these due to bad oiling, and could have starved your crank bearings- spinning them. Has it overheated recently? I rebuilt mine earlier this year , and had more problems than I anticipated. The rings (all of them) came out in multiple pieces- I'm talking 7-8 pieces per ring. I purchased it this way and drove it home, rode nice -but was a sick dog as far as power goes. After I spent about 1600 bucks, I seen in a Jim Pace Chevrolet catalog a crate motor "complete" (clearing them out) $395 I wanted to get my gun and shoot the car, but for now, the plan is to drive the hell out of it!
