howdy yall,
I just bought 2003 silverado with a 4.8L. I am in the midst of doing all the engine modifications, but i want to put remote start on it. Does anyone know if it will work, and also, how can i put an aftermarket cd player in. i have been told that i can't because that it is hooked up to the dash, i am not too sure? any suggestions or help that would be awesome. thanks.

I can at least help you with the remote start. It turns out you have to interface with the GM security and remote keyless entry system as well as the onboard computer data bus. I did a lot of searching and found a place that handles all three pieces. Yes, three things you need. A GM passlock interface module, a data bus interface, and the remote start system itself. The one this outfit sells does everything except windows, and all from about a mile away! It also turns out that the install is not as hard as you think. Both modules are plug and play. You don't have to pull apart door pannels or anything. No meters or having your wife start the truck a gazillion times to find the right wire with a meter. I'm very good at electronics, so i'm not at all afraid of this, but I still bet it's at least a 12 pack and a shower. I haven't done this yet because I want a fast truck before I avoid frozen hair fresh out of the shower in the morning. Price? About $300, but damn nice to have.
As for the aftermarket sound, a good friend of mine that does installs told me it can't be done because the radio is somehow hooked to the anti-theft system. Notice the flashing red LED when you set your locks?
Ya, I know, I didn't want to believe it either. He said a subwoofer system under the back seat fed directly by the rear channel is a huge improvement in sound.
Good Luck

I have an aftermarket CD player in my 99 Z and it works just fine. I've had 2 actually. All you do is take out the old one, get the proper installation brackets, wiring harness (so you dont have to cut the factory wires) and an antenna adapter and your ready to roll. I have the factory speakers in their locations and 2 Kenwood 10's behind my seat w/ a 500w amp and they sound very nice.

Ok I have remote start on my 2000 silverado and it works fine. You have to get a Bypass Module for your stock alarm system. Top companys usually sell these as options along side their alarms. They work great on silverados and i recomend Autopage. AS for the CD player my friend has a 2003 Silverado and I dont know what all these people are talking about. I installed his aftermarket CD player fine. There is another wire you must run across the dash over to the headlights i believe it has to do with the accessory delay but im not positive. But i know for a fact you can have an aftermarket CD player.

I do remote starts and stereos for a living. I have my own shop. There are ways around doing the installs and not having to use those interfaces but I do not recomend it. Trust me, before those interfaces were availible, I had to do it the hard way. Anyway, I only use the best stuff which is from DEI. You can look at them @ www.directed.com The ignition interface is #555L which self learns the code everytime you start the truck with the key. This is very important because that code can and will change over a period of time. Others do not change once they are programed. Take a look... http://directed.com/guides/manuals/ig/accessories/N555L_7-02B.pdf
The factory alarm and door lock interface is #456G. It comes self programed to the fullsized trucks. There are some points that you have to remember when installing it in order for ALL programming options to work. Take a look... http://directed.com/guides/manuals/ig/accessories/N456G.pdf
In my expreriances, the CrimeStopper units are a little diffilcult to work with.
As far as the radio it's simular to the other newer GM vehicles. You can use the Metra VT-GMRC-01 harness or use the regular harness and run a wire like stated above. The only problem is that you will not get the door chime if you do not use the METRA kit.
