Revell Datsun 510

Since I have never seen a completed version of this kit on the forum (believe me I tried searching) I decided to give it a try...

I began working on the body first. I shaved the emblems, side markers, rear trunk handle and key whole and widened the body panel lines. I also modified the front fascia with new openings and enlarged grill openings. Everything glued together and puttied smooth.. no primer yet:

the kit requires a lot of clean up, but its pretty unique subject matter, so it makes it all better...

I am looking to use these rims: 17" Advan RG unless I can get a hold of some 16" RS wattanabes

I think it looks good. i'm trying to get one of these, just to get me moving on another project and outta the slump I'm in with the R31

Even though its an old kit, its still good. And believe it or not, the VG30DETT from the Tamiya Nissan 300ZX fits absolutley perfect with out any cutting.

the CF looks awesome like a possum... uhm, not sure about the rims tho, depends on the color tho... one of the sexiest naked kits i've seen so far :)

I've always liked the kit, and having it reissued was a good move on Revell's part. I have one myself that I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it.

Beyond the Aoshima BBS RG's I have for it.

I agree with everyone else, this is a great kit. Not only is it good looking, a neat subject, but it's fun to build! Cheap too! Over all it's a very pleasant model that allows you to experiment. That's good stuff. Anywho, you asked to see if anyone's built any, my half-assed attempt can be found by following this link (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=152954). Ratdat's awesome version is in that thread, too, but maybe you should talk him out of some more pictures of it....

Good luck with this kit, hope it turns out great. The Watanabes should look great, there are some OOP Aoshima's I wanted so badly...

The sharpness of detail on this kit might not be up there with the likes of Tamiya, but I can say for sure, this kit is a very accurate representation of a 510. It's got heaps of potential too.

I quite like the choice or rims here. The CF hood is very cool and nicely done. Believe it or not you can actually buy a CF hood for real 510's! :eek7: If you want to get trick with the engine how about chopping the side draughts of the intake and fabrication a plenum, then knock up a turbo and manifold ...if you want, I have pics of stock L series 510 engines with turbos on. Or take a look at this one (http://datsun510.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=4&thumb=1) ..this is actually a 1300!

One thing you might find with this kit..the suspension sits pretty low. You might have to do some alterations for big rims. Other things you can do to improve this one is to fit the grille and tail lights from the hasegawa 510 SSS kit, That kit has separate chrome tail lights and the grille is really nice. The exhaust on the Revell kit is a bit poor too but I would think just about anybody building this kit would be making a fatter exhaust anyway :naughty:

The one I built before is now dead and gone...a parts donor for my Auster model. It was either break that one up or bust into a new kit just to take a few bits. I have three Revell 510 kits waiting to be built, two BRE ones and a tuner version. One will be built as the BRE #46 car, One as the #85 car and one will probably get built into something crazy, maybe with the Tamiya VG30DETT from the 300ZX kit. If only there was a 1/24 kit with an SR20DET in it :naughty:

Ah, if only I had the time :grinno: First to be done will be the #46. I've been collecting reference pics for months and have just ordered an aftermarket decal set. I can't wait to start but with ten kits on the go at the moment I've promised myself not to start anymore until I've finished one. :evillol:

Honestly, I think if you track down AMT/Ertl's quite good Datsun 280ZX Turbo kit, you'll be well on your way to a turbo L series engine (you'd have to resculpt the exhaust manifold to make it four cylinder, though. I'm going to do something a bit simpler by kitbashing the AMT 280ZX with the Revell 240Z).

I always love seeing these old Revell kits treated to a good clean build up. They're really proof that you don't have to be the Big T in order to produce a good kit.

And the fact that the kits are so much older than most Tamiyas makes them that much cooler.

This is going to be awesome.....

quick updates. Began working on the engine parts. The engine should be fairly detailed, I have ordered a lot of parts like the webber carbs and engine wiring...etc.

but so far I got a couple of things sorted out.. distributor got wired up, billet aluminum pulleys, drive belts, oil filter, oil caps, etc...

how do u make that CF hood? everything else is good but the wheels... really not my taste, especially in a old school Datsun.. I suggest something like the Panasport type of wheel, u know black/dark center with a polish lip.. and not too big of wheel diameter.

anyways, this kit is a nice kit once it is completed, i build myself one a while back (my second model after i joined AF) and it came out beutiful if you ask me. i have 15" RS wannabees on order to put on my datsun once i get em... I did mine in Testors Met. Saphire Blue, with a bunch of tuner decals on each side, with a number on both front doors, a bottle of nitrous in the back seat, and i think im gonna put a racing seat and roll cage in it soon, its a great car for that "oldschool" tuner/racer.

Gonna keep my eye on this thread.

Sorry, that's the only pic I had of my old one built :disappoin . Only other pic I have is of the body before it was painted with just the wheels on. I have a 510 coupe model in the works but it's slow going as it's a terribly inaccurate model (Doyusha)

I use it for track days although it does see plenty of road use too. I'll be making a model of it one day from a Hasegawa kit :iceslolan If only I could find a 1/24 KA24DE engine !

as cool as that car is eddie, I'd have to have a 2dr. There's a body shop a few min's from here that has one as their display car, it's a pretty metallic silver, has konig 16x7 rewinds with goodyears all around, a 10pt cage, and I've never seen under the hood, but I'm sure it's special there too.

I ordered them from http://www.pattosplace.com who are in Australia. I should have them middle of next week. I'll let you know if the quality looks okay. The same sheet also has the decals for the BRE 240Z on it.

I've seen them painted up completely in a few 510 kits and it looks all wrong. Also the front cover is aluminium as is the distributor and oil pump. No choice here for two reasons...first reason is that 2 doors were not sold in Europe at all and secondly, unlike there, 510's are extremely rare here. There are only 16 still on the road in the UK. I own two of them :iceslolan My car had 46,000 miles on it when I got it and it was a stocker owned by an old guy who'd had it since it was 9 months old. I wonder what he'd think of it now :cwm27:

I am going to paint the front cover, as more of an esthetic finishing touch and to give contrast to the aluminum pullies. I am going to work on the head.. the wiring etc..

The sidedraft webbers are not compelted, they are stock units, detailed with Detail Master carb linkage kit.. will be wired and will use Machined ALuminum Specialties aluminum opened webbers with intake tubing. SHoudl be ok.. will post more pics.

Sakatsu has a set of metal weber carbs for detailing motors. Though it doesn't look like you need them...! If you're still interested, you can see them at HLJ (http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?SAK3025) but you might have to look elsewhere to find one in stock that you can buy.

The Cf decals are 1/20 scale silver cf from scale motor sports. I have ordered a set of turned velocity stacks with throttle bodies.. might look nice when finished and all wired up.

I am also scratch building a three point strut bar....what pain...

Next up is the body paint :)

Throttle bodies would be cool! I'm keen to see that strut bar when it's done. There's some nice attention to not only detail but technical accuracy going on here...I like that :bigthumb:

One of the only things I have a problem with on the Revell kit is the way the strut tops are separate from the inner wings...doesn't look quite right when it's assembled. Next time round I plan to cut the strut top area away from the body and fabricate new ones from sheet styrene to attach to the inner wings.

The torque in the KA is awesome in the 510. So much so that after fitting it I felt it needed a taller diff ratio..a 3.7 to replace what I thought was a 4.1, only when I removed it I found it was already a 3.7! I ran the 4.1 for a week and it was silly :screwy:. It would do donuts in 3rd gear. I wanted a non turbo for the track, especially in the wet. It's well on the pace with things like Lotus Elises, Caterhams and the like on the track...partially though that's down to the handling and tyres than outright power to weight.

Anyway, enough of all this 1:1 talk (and even more thread hijacking :sly: ) ...back to the 1:24 Datsun 510 talk :iceslolan

OH MY GOD!! That just sick! I have been working on my R170 Mercedes SLK 3.2 so I know how it is to einvest all this time into a car.. My best time (off topic I know) is 11.52 1/4mile. 0-100km is around 4.8 right now ;)

Damn, your closing in on my cutlass' 1/4mile time. Speaking of that, I've been neglecting my baby, It's on jack stans awaiting a full 22'' tub treatment, 8-12pt cage update, and more work on the motor. Just haven't had time to do much with it. I'm thinking once it's done, I might sell it, but I dunno, I've sold it before, and bought it back:p

Damn look at the etched parts! BTW, eddie, do you know if any kit has the KA20de?? I need one, for umm, this project, *cough510cough*, I got one today and the tamiya TT v6 don't fit, it's too long and too tall, or I didn't fit it right.

Here's a pic of a BRE I built recently. When finished, I just plain didnt like it, so I sold it. I think the tires are too high profile and the car sat too high off the ground. I looked for ages and couldnt find any better tires that were the right size.

Is it just me, or is the first injector stack closest to the tranny longer than the others? Is there a reason for this? Sweet project dude, but your pics could use a little more light to show off the details better.

it does look a little longer... nonetheless, very tight engine, estimate on how much bhp it puts out?

The interior is going to be plain Jane bare metal with black vinyl dashboard, seats and door padding..

Awesome detail.. Engine looks unbelievable. I like the RG's, just if they had some lower profile tires. I think they take up too much of the wheel arch making them look weird.
