1997 Malibu Problems

Hi guys,

I'm From Mexico and have a 1997 Malibu LS and in the last 5 months have had a problem with my car. The car turns off when drive it, I checked all parts, starter, alternator, battery, checked with the scanner and no problems, checked all relays and sensors and noting no problems. But my car is turning off suddenly. And is realy a big headache. I need for help, please help me...

Dude..your english is fine...alot better than some of the people that speak it all the time..
When your car turns off, what happens? Do you lose all electrical power or is it a case of the engine cuts off and you have to restart it?

Hi, Look when the problem is present I'm driving my car an turns off and the antitheaft and oil light are on and the parking light are on too. With the problem present sometimes only need to put the key in off and restart the engine again and my car works, another times put the key in off and try to restart and only the starter works but the engine not turns on, I need to put the key in start position and wait for the lights in the Board are on to restart the engine.

I think the problem is a damage in the AntiTheaft module. But I hope you can help me or What do you think?

Hi guys, I have the same problems with my Malibu LS 1997, and nobody know what happen. I'm very sad and the same time very angry, my car is not fixed yet, I spend a lot of money trying to fix it and noting. I would like to you help me with some oppinion or clue about my problem.
Let mi rechapter what happen, when I'm driving my car suddently it turns off all lights in the board are off except the antitheaft and the oil Lights. If I try to turn on the car again the starter works good but the car no turns on, so then I need to put the key in on position and wait for ALL the lights in the board are on, then try to start the engine and "voila" the car turns on again... Some one told me about my car is overheating and the car is protecting by itself and turns off. The only thing I know is about my car is not good and I don't know what happen

First I would recommend doing a little diagnosis...check for codes in all the modules..
Next, check the battery and the connections.
It seems from what you are describing that this is going to be an electrical problem..maybe a faulty ignition switch?

Is it me, or is all the newer malibus lemons?

Or is it just the intake gasket thing?

I have a Malibu with 85,000 miles on it. It has been a lemon. $4000+ in repairs - rebuilt trans., intake gasket, alternator, etc. I also had problems under warranty. It is currently in the shop for a check engine light problem. I would like to dump the car, but it's trade-in value is $1500 per KBB.

By now, you all undoutedly know that my '98 LS has been nothing but headaches since Day One.

The problem of it turning itself off when running hasn't happened to me in the Malibu, but did in the '96 Monte Carlo previously. There, the problem was a bad engine computer.
