asking for an opinion on mufflers

Hi, i'm a newbie from florida, and i got a question. About a month ago, i sliced off my exhaust right after the muffler so i could get some noise, that's not causing a problem at all but it more or less relates to what i'm going to ask so i figured i'd include it.
As far as getting a muffler goes, and you've probably heard this all before, but what do you think of the Cherry Bomb mufflers? I don't want to get anything expensive right now and i know i can get one for about $20 or so. I know they can be loud which is one of the reasons why i want one, but i've heard something about them rusting? And/or for whoever has or has had them, what do you think? Also as far as them stating that they boost overall performance, about how much more? Thanks,
- Lindsey, or Li

yeah, sounds like a cherry bomb wouldn't hurt...like you've said, they do provide a great sound, a I haven't really heard of them rusting before....just make sure that you put a section of pipe after the cherry bomb so that if sparks or what-not come out when your wheeling you don't have to worry, and so that water/dirt don't get into it and degrade the packing or cause it to rust from the inside (maybe this is the rust you heard about?) --as far as boosting your power...it will, as well as increasing your milage, but your only talking about a miniscule amount..not really anything to brag about---
The ultimate solution, of course, is that you could just cut out your muffler all together, like i did..I have a 2.9, and it sounds REALLY GOOD.--that is of course if you don't live in a county that has emissions inspections

a friend of mine has cherry-bombs on a dodge ram and it sounds really good but that has a big old 318 in it. they've been on the truck for a few years and he's not has a problem. as for my ranger's exhaust, im going back to my redneck heritage and straight piping it with dual stacks. hahahaha lol

sweet. yeah, as far as the rust goes, i'm guessing its probably coming from the inside too. if i did cut out my muffler, that wouldn't cause any back pressure, would it?

if you cut out your muffler, it definetly wouldn't cause more backpressure-- back pressure would be increased if you added a more RESTRICTION, but cutting your muffler off would only decrease your back pressure...
oh yeah, there is one other rule...if your exhaust system is too free flowing, then the thought is that your performance won't be as good because the exhaust that usually is there creates suction to help move the fumes behind it, but this doesn't matter unless you make the SIZE of the actual pipe bigger,
so saws-all away and enjoy--but don't expect to pass emissions

Ok, that makes sense now. One last question, taking all this off, when it gets really gnarly as far as cold weather goes....could the cold air get in there and crack the block? not like that's something to really worry about down here really, but a friend had warned me about it. As far as emissions go, we don't have that. Thanks for all your input.

just go with a aftermarket set.... I was the first person in the whole entire state of MT to get a Gibson catback for my 99 ranger 4x4 (bought it in 99, right after it was just released by gibson).... it sounds awesome and has a very low rumble to it at idle.
it ran me about 250 including install.

I worked deq here in washington state for a while, just sos yall know, the muffler is STRICTLY for noise reduction. dont feel compelled to go and purchase a 300 dollar muffler setup if ya like the volume the way it is. All the muffler in the world wont change your deq levels. Need good fire and vac for hydrocarbons, need good fuel and air for o2. beyond this if your rig runs itll pass. vac leaks and weak spark will getcha EVERY time...
