did you look at the tranny at all? check your tranny fluid also, that could be low causing it to lock up, but i'm not sure why it would make a bang like that... make sure that your tranny doesnt have any holes in it, one of my friends shift pin on his tranny came loose, sent it and some gears through a hole the size of a grapefruit in the side of the tranny... luckly it still had warrent, good luck with that, hope its just the fluid, let us know what you find out!

It would really be helpful to include what the hell the car is ;) I'm guessing its an AWD and a 5spd, since thats the most common configuration. I'll bet the tcase failed. Pull the drain plug and see if any fluid comes out. Should be half a quart and free of metal chunks ;) If the fluid seems normal, or its not an AWD, most likely something broke inside the tranny and is jambing up the gears. But this typically wont lock it up in both directions (forward and reverse), while a tcase will.

Yep. If it is awd as already said it was probably the transfer case. This is common on the awd cars.So much so there was a recall. If it locked and the recall work was not done it will be to late.Just be glad you were not going really fast, a lot of people have been hurt and even killed.Chrysler.com has a recall section click on it and run you VIN number it will tell about any recalls on your car. It will also tell you if the work is completed or not.Recall work is free so it is always good to check! Sorry about your luck.
