K&N performance filters

Do those K&N performance air filters actually help? I've been thinking about purchasing one because it might help the car run smoother while idleing or give it a little more breating room while accelerating.
Any other cheap performance ideas out there?

Yeah, you can recognize a small difference in it. Nothing big though.

I have one of those in my car and what I noticed is the nice roaring sound it makes hehe..the throttle response improved slightly with it...and i emphasize slightly

Depends on the car, I've lost as much as 10 and gained as much as 15.
usually you stand to gain 2 or 3 and loose 2 or 3 torque, pretty even trade off. Depends on the car though
by the way... your won't even notice 2 or 3 hp.
