i was just wondering if it was possible to swap a 951 turbo system to a 944n/a? if so what is involved
body mod/ engine rebuild ect.

i just want a way to get more power out of my n/a944 without selling and buying a 951

Why try to make a car that Porsche already made? If you did make your N/A a turbo you would still need to upgrade the suspension and brake to accomodate the new HP. Trust me I've been down this road-just buy a turbo!

Because, some of us get a good deal on a NA chassis and would be possibly cheaper to drop in the turbo motor rather than buy a turbo car. For instance, I just bought an '86 944 NA on eBay for less than $2k. The car is in perfect condition except the motor is seized due to oil pump failure. I would be interested in what is required for the turbo motor installation into the NA chassis. I'm sure somebody has done it? How much would such a task cost? If you have a complete motor, ecu, and harness is it a drop-in affair?

I've got the opportunity to make power since I have to replace the motor anyway, so I'd like to look at my options. Any info appreciated.

well its been my experience that a good low milage turbo engine, complete with a good turbo and ecu will run any where from 2K-3k. Now you still have the exhaust issue, cooling lines and system are different, plus you non-turbo trans axle will probably not hold up. Take all these things into consideration, plus your time and its not cheaper than a turbo. From someone who deals with these cars all day long-the only way I would think of doing this job to make it cheaper than just buying a turbo was if I had a crashed turbo to transfer all the little things that would end costing you more than a turbo car would. Again been there done that, just trying to save you the head ache.

My suggestion for more HP is a Wilks chip, cold air intake, header, and free flow exhaust system. Want more?-go to a Web cam, higher compression pistons, port and polished head and balanced intake. Need any more info on these mods let me know.

Would it be easier to put a S2 NA motor in rather than the turbo? Just because of the fact that motor is NA might make it easier to swap in?

I'd rather drop in the stock S@ motor with more power rather than mod the stock NA motor thats in there now. In my case, my motor is seized so I have to buy a rebuilt or used motor anyway. I think that the price of the stock 2.5L plus the chip, intake, header, and exhaust would be more than a complete 3.0L S2 motor.

An "s" would be ALOT easier-but can you find one for a reasonable price? If so do it! That would be a cool modification

Sorry, I mean S2. Held the shift button too long :P

I believe I saw a junkyard in Ohio that had a complete '89 S2 motor for $1500 w/harness and ecu. Anybody know what problems I would run into?

Wiring is my main concern.

SpeedShifter, why dont you find a 1989 944 Engine because they increased the displacemnt and has more power. seems to be more of a practical swap. The S2 has much of the same upgrades as the Turbo. (suspension, body, trans, etc).

Id buy a late model 944 engine (2.7L) and if your serious about power there are Supercharger's available for all n/a 944's. Its runs a little over $5K.

NO one makes a turbo kit for a 944. You would have to fab a turbo and appropriate componants on.

Even if you had a turbo fabricaed on a regular 944 you wouldnt be able to run much boost seeing as the n/a engine compoants were not engineered for the stress of a turbo. You would be only able to run 5psi at max. Why spend thousands of dollars to fab ir all up if you an only run 5 psi. plus you would need a engine management from a 944 Turbo which will cost you more.

All in all its cheaper to buy a S2 or 951. In my opinion the only 944's worth puting that kind of cash into are S2, & 944 Turbo's. Turbocharging or Supercharging a S2 would be worth the money seeing as the cars already make over 200hp. If you turbocharge a regular 944 you be lucky if you got to 200hp.

Hello, you need to wake up. Where did all this talk about superchargers and turbos come in?

I'm talking about replacing my seized NA 2.5L with either the 2.5L Turbo motor out of the 944 Turbo or a NA 3.0L out of the '89 S2. I'm only talking motor swap. I know that the stock NA motor that came in my car has no potential for power, thus why I want to put something different in.

You want more power, jackass, put in a small block chevy. By any chance did you own a camaro before this bargin Porsche of yours?

Nope, no camaro.

I apologize for being a jackass lately. There is a lot less info on 944s then I anticipated and I've been getting frustrated. I've been taking it out on the members and I apologize for it.

To clarify about before, I was talking about dropping in the 951 motor, not turboing the 944.

Thanks for the advice.

The 944S2 engine would be a bolt in swap, yes. You might need some things from the 944S2 though, like the mounts and the clutch. There will be some wiring gremlins to work out, but it's basically the same harness.

N/A to turbo.....
Engine
wiring harness
DME
KLR
cooling system
intake system
intercooler
exhaust manifolds
crossover pipe
turbo
downpipe
wastegate
cat pipe

Did I miss anything?
