How To Fix Navigation On 750?

I Have 1998 750il With A Nagavation. But When I Purchased The Car The Previous Owner Said That The Unit Needed Repair. I Have Never Seen How The Nayigation Unit Works On These Cars. What Should The Process Be To Trouble Shoot The Navigation?
