Transmission: Reverse Lost and Steerings Problems

my 99 tahoe 2dr A/T has lost it reverse, when i shift into R it acts just like neutral, and when i put into D it wont shift until about 5k rpms then it seems to go into 3rd gear and skip second all together, the second problem i have had for a while, the steering seems to feel stiff until it gives just as i turn to the right or left from center, it seems worse on the right and causes oversteering as it gives away. the major problems is the transmission and im worried to drive it that i may ruin it further, ive heard some recommendations but was wondering if anyone has dealt with this before, and what their options where.

Thanks JD

I had a similar problem with my steering and it turned out to be the EVO sensor was on the way out. As for the transmission problem I dont have any suggestions.

Sounds like you've got the same thing I've got, except I haven't lost Reverse yet.

No 2nd and no 4th.

Nothing easy here.. Local repair shop wanted MINIMUM $1500 to rebuild it, Dealerships want over $1200 to repair.

BUT... I did find a transmission place.

Ask for Dustin. He's really cool to work with.

I am getting a new tranny with 24K mile warranty on it Monday. $600
If you can install it yourself (which is what I am going to try) you will save yourself a lot of money.

sounds like the reaction shell sheared and is not turning the sun gear. If no other damage this should be cheap to fix, parts around $200, labor 10 hrs

My tranny on my 99 Tahoe kicked the bucket last week with only 33370 miles on it. The reaction shell disintegrated. GM Repair cost $1731.67.

Wofton- ouch did your warranty just run out? I had the dealer check mine back when mine was under warranty because i thought it shifted hard from 1-2 and they said it was normal. seems like it wasnt, looks like i wont take their word for it again.

Thanks 99ssconv sounds like the problem, I have a local tranny mechanic I'm going to check with to see how much he'll charge. I'll let everyone know how it goes, thanks for everyone's input its much appreciated.

NO, my warranty ran out back in 2002, but I am hearing a lot of problems with the Chevy tranny on the Tahoe. It is always the shell in the tranny. The part costs 40 bucks but to install it is HIGH. This must be a manufacturers problem. I am surprised GM has not recalled this or a class action suit been initiated.

Glad i got a warranty for my 2000 tahoe Z71. I just got it 3 days ago, sure glad i bought the warranty, it sounds like i will be using it. I was just regretting spending 2600 for another 36,000 miles. Sometimes it pays to get some insurance....

The sun shell gear in my 99 Tahoe failed last year at 46k miles (symptoms were a clunk then no reverse and a couple forward gears.) The sun gear split into two pieces - with the back separating from the front.

The transmission work to replace it was $1,200 at an independent shop. Their transmission guys said this is a common problem and that Chevy had "strengthened" the part at some point.., but who knows. I'm saving the old part in the event there is a recall or Chevy decides to take responsibility.

I have written some letters to GM about the tranny problem in that the shell gear is a weak link, but I don,t think I will hear from them
