whats the diff between a exhaust and a muffler?

Exhaust is the whole piping running from the engine to the exhaust tip. The Muffler just quiets the exhaust or adds the custom ricer sound. I doubt you see any performance gain in a muffler swap. A new exhaust system will increase flow and generally give more h.p.

so if i buy the exhaust and if the tip is too small, witch i dont like, i can buy a 5 - 7 inch muffler and put it in there with the exhaust? would that work? u c what im saying..

yes u can chage the muffler alone in an exhaust.. but u need to cut the old one and weld the new exhaust.. if u know what i mean :D

If you want two mufflers you need to have a dual exhaust system. If will probally be a y-split exhaust it will start as one and then split off into two.

Just a thought, when you want to add a y-shape exhaust to make it a dual exaust (pipes on each side of the car) u r also adding more weight. The more weight you add, the more it affects performance. I believe for every 100 lbs added, its cost about 10 hp decrease and vice versa. I guess that matters if its a race car or show car. Also, when you add an muffler to the exhaust, make sure the exhaust exit size is the same as the muffler inlet side. Kind of hard to add a 3" inlet muffler to a 2.5" exhaust. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, and to clarify. The when you add weight you don't actually loose 10 hp, but it feels as if you do b/c it slows your car down.

If you are getting an exhaust system and mufflers then you should get headers too.

I live in the midwest and I have had several exhaust systems put on several different vehicles. If you want mandrel bends, buy them at NAPA or some auto parts store. I bought 3 u bends and a dynomax racing muffler (strait through as to minimize restrictions). I convinced a guy to weld it all together at a hillbilly muffler shop for $50 (including using his 3 inch strait piping). I got a discount at NAPA and total I have spent less than $200. If you've got to buy name brand parts try dsmtrader.com. I don't understand stainless steel because how many of us are going to keep are cars that long? I'd encourage you to find a way to spend less and still get what you want.

You don't need to worry about a header for a long long time. There are way better ways to spend that money right now.

If you like the bling buy a borla mufler. It has a unique sound.

I hope you aren't going to get 5-7" mufflers. You probably have a 2 1/4 or a 2 1/2 inch exhaust. It will be more money to get put on. Also just picture the air going from a pipe to a muffler at least double its side. I really don't think it would be better than a muffler that matches the piping.

damn thanks homie, but im not sure if just one single muffler or two of them, hmm i dotn want to waste alot of money just on the exhaust and muffler cus i want some lambo doors and a body kit and other stuff, than ill work on the motor, and also another question, the stock turbo that the 99 gsx has, is it good? i heard alot of ppl change it to another kind or something, whats up with that... :eek7:

I have a 1g eclipse (92). From my understanding of 2g's, the stock turbo is nearly maxed out from the factory. My 1g turbo has modifying potential but if you're going to upgrade you might consider bigger. Keep reading these posts, maybe even go back and look at old ones. There is alot of info and you will learn all this stuff. Try www.vfaq.com and read the 'stickys' on www.racingknowledge.com.
