94 Ranger Fuel pump doesn't always work

Sometimes, the fuel pump on my 94 Ranger (actually a Mazda B4000) doesn't come on. If I let it sit for 30 minutes, it will work. I replaced the fuel pump relay, and that worked for awhile. Another time when it wouldn't start, I pulled the relay and reinserted it; then it started. It only happens about once a month. Any suggestions? Can someone tell, externally, if my fuel pump is bad?

Note sure how hot it was when this occured, but I do live in FL. It definitely happened this summer 3 or 4 times; not sure about winter.

was thinking that either there may be a short that is popping the relay or that something is wrong with the pump and it is drawing too many amps. as for the exploder, what is the prob?

Try checking groung connections. Had the same problem with my fs bronco and after 2 new pumps, a filter, and lines... just happed to bump fuel pump ground wires at battery while broken down and every thing sprung to life. $.10 ring connector fixed problem completely.
