I bought my truck brand new in Oct 2002. I never really had any problems wiht my truck till recently. Today I took my truck out in the snow but it wasn't bad enough to have to use 4 wheel drive. When I left the house all was good but when i got to my destination not 5 miles form the house I could not get the truck to turn into a parking spot. I struggled to get out of the parking lot. IF I am in parking lot speeds the wheel is very hard to turn. If I am at road speeds it is easier but there is a "whine" sound to the truck especially if you try to turn the wheel at any speed. I pulled the car over and checked the power steering fluid and it looked full but frothy. Any ideas???? I am going to the auto store tomorrow to get more fluid and goform there! I also need to find out how to empty what is in the truck now! If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it ! Thanks Amy

you obviosly have a leak allowing air to get into the ps system causing the frothing.to drain it would require a ps flushing machine to get all of the old fluid out. just to get it out of the resavoir use a turkey baster.

Since your truck is an 02 and hopefully it has less than 36000 miles, it will still be covered under the 3/36 factory warranty...take it back to the dealer and have it checked before you spend any money.

I just had the same problem with my 2002 Yukon XL. Apparrently the power steering assist stopped functioning. I am on vacation in Florida and none of the local dealers are open until Monday. This happened Friday night and I have to drive back to NY on Tuesday. I am not happy, before I left for vacation I had to replace the emergency brake just to pass inspection. Truck has 40K miles, more money, more money.
Is the power steering something the local service stations can handle?

Just how powerful is the power steering supposed to be? I may have the same problem, or the start of it. I just bought a 2002 Yukon XL K2500. The steering is fine when it is moving, but when stopped it is impossible to turn the wheel. In all my other cars, including a 1995 Isuzu Trooper and 1998 Ford E350 van, I can turn the steering wheel with little effort when stopped. It is probably not a good thing to do, but it says something about how strong the power steering is.

Hi, you are right, the power steering is supposed to work at idle engine speed. Mine does.
