EGR Valve carbon problems

My 94 S-10 Blazer keeps getting carbon chunks stuck in the EGR Valve making the pintle stick open. When this happens the ECM makes the truck try to shut down and I get this really rich egg smell from it. I take the EGR Valve off and Clean it out then put it back on and it is fine for a day or two sometimes a week or two and then all of the sudden it gets more in it. What can I do to cure the source of the carbon chunks so they quit getting lodged in the pintle of the valve. I have already replaced the valve 4 times at almost $300 each. I think the carbon is the cause of the failing valves. Any help would be appreciated..........Tim

Check out www.tomco.com they have a screened gasket that will prevent the carbon chunks from entering the valve

Thanks for the info Merlin.......It was a big help. I didn't know they made such a gasket or I would have done that right away. I thought I was going to have to, somehow, correct the source of the problem. Thanks for the info.........Tim

The true repair for this problem is to remove the lower intake and have it sandblased to remove the carbon build up...this is an expensive repair...the tomco gasket provides a inexpensive "fix" for the problem

Tim: I have a similar problem on my 1993 GMC Jimmy 4.3 4Dr.
I have had the erg valve cleaned and about 2 months later...
it is loading up and starting very hard...black soot in tail pipe...
How hard is it to remove the erg valve myself?
And, did you follow up on the gasket for this problem and how do I obtain a gasket for the same...I am continuing to drive this truck daily but it needs a fix...please answer back...MJohn [email protected]
