240 Reliability???

I'm kinda flowing towards getting a 92 Nissan 240SX... so i wanted to know how reliable it is? Like the tranny... since i heard alot of bad stuff about the tranny... or the engine? I found one that has 120k miles on it, and the body looks like its in good condition... its white and a fastback... selling for $3250 it self and $4500 with full C-West kit... will it be reliable enough for me to drive it regulary everyday? I was also thinkin... how much will it cost for an S15 front conversion?

i'm not sure if you're just sayin shit to make noobs not want a 240, but what the HELL are you talking about?

nissan auto trannies rn't that good? i had a 92 sentra when i was sixteen with over 200,000 on the odometer -- that thing took a beating. it saw more than a few neutral drops and was shifted like it was never made to. my buddy had an accord that he did the same shit with. the accord went to the junkyard. i sold that sentra for more than i bought it for. it ran beautifully, no problems. i am more then impressed with nissan durability.

my tranny, with all the abuse that its taken, has a bad 3rd gear sychro. i'm not sure if this is a common problem with 240s. i know that s13s do have very sloppy shifters, but i just got my B&M SS in the other day, and let me say, holy SHIT what a difference. it shifts beautifully. its extrememly precise with no play. i love it. by far my favorite mod so far. (although it still grinds when i shift from second to third at high rpms because of the bad sychro)

nissans, along with toyota and honda, are EXTREMEMLY reliable cars when compared to other brands.

reliable to drive everyday? yes, if it has been taken care off. take it for a drive. you'll know if its solid or if its a pile. $3250 - some say that is high, well, it is high, but i'm not sure you're going to find a good one for less. i would pay it.

s15 conversion - hella expensive, like 5 digits expensive.

over all, they are very fun, very relaible cars. you can't beat them, IMO. just do the 240 community a favor and stay away from uncle ben's goodness, please :) .

acctually 240s aren't all that reliable once over 100k, you can make them last yes, but only with good maintanaince, and a lot of things start to go wrong, they are great cars and can go very high in mileage but are not for the person that doesn't know much about them or cars in particular

oh and toyotas are more reliable than nissans, maybe as reliable as hondas in certain cases

i've noticed that it seems many cars at around 100K miles seem to go through a phase where the things that don't last as long as the rest start to all go bad at the same time. once these things are fixed, it is not downhill from there, but rather the opposite. the car runs smooth again for a long time. common big things to go are the waterpump and the alternator it seems.

i'm curious why everyone thinks that toyota and honda are more reliable than nissans? my uncle is a nissan mechanic, has been for 30 years, and swears by nissan. he thinks they are the BEST brand of cars. bias? yes. opinion deserving respect? definatly.

I meant nothing against nissan at all, I love nissan, I have a nissan hat even, I'm not a very big fan of honda except for the S2000, and I love toyota too, but mazda being my favorite of them all(mostly because I have one :loser: ) but toyota and honda are deffinately the most reliable over all, nissan and mazda are not far behind though, as they are all very great cars, and yes around 100k-150k all these cars start to go downhill, but with a few repairs or replacements it can run great again, and if you rebuild it, it will run better than ever, but if you don't plan to do either then you should consider getting a car with fewer miles

but you didn't answer my question. WHY is toyota and honda better? is that just your opinion?

i also am a mazda fan. mazdaspeed proteges kick ass. i'm pissed they're discontinuing the protege for the 3. also, rx-7s, rx-8s, miatas. good cars.

I bought my 90' 240sx with 80K miles on it for $2,700. When I bought it It was due for a new clutch (ended up changing that at 90K) and the tires were just about shot. I ended up rebuilding the tranny about 1000 miles ago at 104K, I've had no other problems with the car what so ever, and I drove that car just about as hard as I could. Any way, I'm nothing but satisfied with the durability of this car.

I've always considered Nissan in general to be more reliable than Honda or Toyota based on my experiance, but I don't really have enough experiance to say much other than mine has held together very well.

and yes NISSAN AUTOMATIC trannies are shit. Not as bad as Ford, not as good as say a Toyota. All early q45 trannies explode, fact, ALL..... 300zx has a weak tranny, have one in the shop now for that, 240sx auto tranny is weak. old maxima tranny is weak, I think my brother blew his 3 times or so in about a year and a half. That is weak shit lol.
Most nissan trannies are shared in some way, the 300zx probably sees more abuse. And the Q45 trannies were built with a known defect.

how much did the rebuild cost you? did you do it yourself or have it done?

The rebuild was about $1100, that basicly put all new metal in the tranny. I didn't rebuild it (we have a good friend with a shop that took care of that) but I was there to help put it back on.
The reason I took the car in was for a bum input shaft/berring, based on how hard I had been driving the car we decided it was best to rebuild the whole thing while we were down there.
