Anyone else had truble with the rear window wiper getting stuck pointing straight up (92 Grand Voyager SE)? I've seen others with the problem, wondering if it's very common.

My '94 had a recall on the air bag which was connected to the rear wiper as well. Never had a problem with either but got the recall done. About a year later the rear wiper stopped working. Took to dealer and they said it needed replacing. Why I asked and they said it should have been done on a recall and they got Chryrsler to pay for it on my behalf.

Yes my 93 plymouth grand voyager le did it last year. Now the rear wiper motor just makes noise and no movement. Thought a kid yanked the wiper and stripped the gears. Disconnected the thing until I decide if I want to replace it or just get another vehicle.

Yes - what happens is (assuming you have already checked the fuse) something mechanic in the motor goes out and the wipers stays straight up. You can get the new motor from the dealer for ~$100 or so, but the real challenge is to get the thing off without breaking the rear window! I have even heard of people repairing the motor once they had it off, but I just went for a new part.
Assuming you have trouble getting the wiper arm off I've talked with a parts guy at a Dodge dealer who said they just cut the shaft off and then replace the whole thing. That's ok but then you could end up spending another $75 or so for that wiper arm - yes they are that expensive.
The best solution I've seen so far is using a small wheel puller. First you drill a small hole (the size of the wheel puller center) into the center of the wiper arm where it meets the shaft. Drill straight through to the shaft but then stop as soon as you get to it. Then you can put your wheel puller shaft into the hole and the thing comes off like nothing - of course a little penetrating oil may be called for as well.
Once off you can remove and repair or replace the motor as you desire from inside the back.
Hope this helps!

I have a '93 GV and the rear wiper doesn't work at all. It'll make all the noise you want it to, but won't move. I've driven it for about two years now without worying about it, if you keep the rear window reasonably clean it shouldnt be to big a problem. My opinion, anyway. Best of luck!

On one of my 89's, the wiper has started acting slow, it will just sit there after you turn it on, after a few minutes, it starts wiping slowly. I figure I'll have to work on it soon.

On a 2001 and up, its really easy to replace. Take a small flat tabbed screwdriver and pry the plastic cover off the end where the wiper arm attaches to the motor. Take the nut off the end. I used a small puller to take the arm off. It was a tie rod puller I used. Then you need to open the hatch and take the 2 screws out of the handall. they should pe phillips head. Now you can pop the back covering off the inside (the actuall trim pannel is snapped in place.)
I let mine hang by the wires for a minute untill I could un hook the rear cargo lighting and the wiper lead. Remove the 3 long bolts from the wiper motor and you are done!
Aused one here in atlantic Canada is $125. I dont know what the dealer cost is but ill reply and let you know.
I have taken mine apart, and You should not do it. They are presseed together. I would say its a one shot deal!

Mine didn't work when I bought the car. After messing with it the motor hummed all the time and I had to unhook it. Arm is frozen on the motor so just about have to cut it off. There is a trade in on the old motors if you take it to a dealer, but it depends on the partsman whether or not he'll accept it with the shaft cut off. Mine said he would.

I have the same problem, stuck upright. It's a pain because it's right in the middle of the window, I'm going to just take the wiper off. Seen a few of the same things on others in town as well.

I have this problem about once every 6 months. Every time, it "self corrects" when I repeatedly turn them ON, wait and turn them OFF. Sometimes, it works the first time, other times it take 4 or 5 tries. But in every case, I am able to fix the problem by turning them ON and OFF this way.

I was wondering about that...
I have a '92 caravan, and it was pouring outside. Before, no problem, wiper did it's job... but this time I turned it on, it wiped 2 times and stopped, pointing straight up. So I need a new motor for this thing?

Mine got stuck this summer, it can be returned if I help it manually, but I need to replace it, I bought a used gear and motor from a guy who had to cut the arm on it so I hope that it's just the motor. But I was wondering if I have to remove the whole gadget to be able to change the motor? Seeming that it is so hard to get the arm off!?

There is a recall on many of these when I worked at the dealership. If your van falls under this recall they will fix it for free. No motoin most cases. This is if you have a 92 vintage style van or in that range. The next gen van does not apply.
CALL YOUR DEALER AND GIVE THEM YOUR VIN NUMBER AND THEY CAN RUN A FUNCTION TO SEE IF YOU HAVE OUTSTANDING RECALLS. MANY DO AND DO NOT REALIZE IT. :grinyes:

I have yet to find a solution to my rear wiper problem. Its not the fuse, the motor, ground problem or the switches. I went to a junk yard and got an almost brand new rear motor for $25 and replaced the old one and nothing. Has anyone actually fixed there rear wiper problem with some of these symtoms?
BTW, I've read on several post that is very hard to replace the rear wiper motor. People breaking there rear glass trying to take off the arm and stripping the teeth or cutting there wiper arm.
Did you guys know that there is a lock on the arm. Push it up with a flat screwdriver and it comes right off like butter. Its very easy, at least on my car, 5 to ten minutes.

If the wiper works but stays straight up, you may want to take off the little round cover at the end of the wiper arm, there is a screw in their and once you tighten it this may take care of your problem.

I had mine quit after selecting intermittent then full on and back to intermittent (changed my mind twice)in about 1 second. It wiped one time then quit alng with the washer. The pilot lite came on when I tried to run it but it would not run. The BCM sensed a short by doing this and shut it down.
I pulled the IOD fuse for about 15 minuites and it fixed the problem. I guess this proceedure resets the BCM Body Control Module. Why they dont just fuse/switch/motor/ground circut it is beyond me!
