Heat 1996 Explorer

No heat all cold air it is a Eddie edition and I can sometimes turn the air condition on and when going back to Heat it will start heating. I have replaced the thermastat.....Heater core has not leaked....need some advice...thanks

This is going to sound crazy because I may be totally wrong - I have a 92 Explorer Sport - same exact problem - it ended up being that there was absolutely no coolant in the radiator at all! Filled it up and let there be heat - someone explained it to me can't remember - but it all affects eachother in the end.

I have a 97 Eddie Bauer and had the same problem. Now the heat does not work and I am told that it is the blend door that opens and shuts depending on the temperature. This is quoted from the Ford dealer at 825 dollars to fix. I'm not paying it - I hate my Ford! This should not be a problem ever - especially on a car that is only a 97. They need to learn to make a better car than this. :mad:

I too have the same exact problem. Dealer told me that blend door and maybe blend door actuator motor(A/C Electronic Door Actuator Motor Assembly)may need to be replaced. They gave me an extimate of about $500. I finally tore into it myself and found that the top part of the blend door where the motor attaches was broken. The motor works fine. The door was laying at an angle and allowing cold air to enter. The motor can be seem if the glove box is removed. It sits on top of the heater coil plentum and is white plastic with an electrical connector on the side facing the passenger seat. It is held in place by four plastic locking pins that are part of the motor mounting plate. When the motor is removed it can be checked by moving the temp. control knob and watching the drive extension rotate. Also if you can place your finger into the hole where the extension goes and feel nothing then the door probably is broken. If this is the case then the dash needs to be removed to access the heater plentum and replace the Blend Door. I'm still debating that project as a "do-it-yourself" project or paying a local mechanic to do it. He is good and much less on labor than dealer. [email protected], Mooresville,IN.

Blend door: combine $600 with a mechanic worth his salt and hopefully it solves your problem...Thing is, I lost my compressor at the same time, metal slivers all through the system (96 Eddie Bauer - 102,000 miles). Yep, this hurts. mechanic says actuator motor on blend door is bad. You gotta really want to drive an explorer to go through this. POint is that after fixing all this crap I can't afford to sell it. :banghead:

I'll add my voice to the chorus. My '96 XLT has only done this a few times, but for now turning the control from "full cold" to "full hot" a few times has eventually given me heat. Now that the warm weather is here, it pretty much stays at "full cold". I'm not looking forward to having to fix it! :disappoin
